The School of Medicine (SOM), USU seeks applications for the position of Professor and Chair of the Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Genetics (APG). The candidate selected for this position will be expected to provide visionary leadership to the department in its research and educational missions. The 31 tenured or tenure-track faculty members in the department employ a wide range of state-of-the-art anatomical, electrophysiological, biochemical, cellular and molecular biological methods to address medical problems associated with neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular pathophysiology, neuroimmune function and metabolism (see http://www.usuhs.edu/apg. The education leaders of the department are responsible for teaching core scientific concepts in the 18-month pre-clerkship phase of the medical student curriculum, ranging from gross human anatomy to the molecular basis of disease, and for the education and training of graduate students with a particular emphasis on the Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs in Neuroscience and Cell and Molecular Biology). Collaborative research opportunities exist with nearby federal laboratories and their overseas partners, including the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and the Naval Medical Research Center, as well as through the National Institute of Health located nearby.

Duties: The incumbent serves as the Chief Executive of the Department of APG and as such is responsible for setting the tactical and strategic course for the department. The Chairperson will facilitate shared governance in the academic setting, and departmental faculty will be actively engaged in significant decisions concerning the department.

Minimum Qualifications: The incumbent must bring to this position a minimum of a Ph.D. or equivalent degree plus substantial experience in medical and graduate education, educational leadership, research, and administration. The successful candidate will demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of executive management in academic organizations. Exceptional interpersonal skills, as well as outstanding written and oral communications skills, are essential. Academic accomplishment, as reflected by a significant number of scientific publications in appropriate critically reviewed journals, is required. U.S citizenship is required.
