The School of Physics at the University of Melbourne (UoM) is seeking a Research Associate, with a background in aerospace engineering and/or development of instrumentation for nano-satellites, to join the SkyHopper Space Telescope mission team.
The SkyHopper Research Associate – Thermal Engineer will lead the design of the thermal management subsystem for the spacecraft and its hosted infrared telescope. The successful applicant will carry out research to design an active cooling system for the infrared focal plane array, based on a commercial miniaturized cryocooler (Stirling type or similar), and the position includes a focus on laboratory characterization and space qualification of key components of the thermal management subsystem.
The University of Melbourne provides a wide range of opportunities for research collaborations within the School and the Faculty of Science. The successful applicant will be expected to undertake some administrative tasks for the School.
To be considered for the role, the appointee will have a Masters degree, completed a PhD or equivalent in Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Astrophysics, Planetary Science, or a related area with focus on spacecraft development. You will have expertise in spacecraft Systems Engineering, or similar projects for scope and complexity, demonstrated through academic and/or professional experience. You will demonstrate potential ability to obtain a license to access ITAR-restricted technical-data and hardware. You will also demonstrate the ability to engage with relevant professional and industry bodies and stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships. It would be desirable to have experience contributing effectively to a (nanosatellite) space mission.
This position is advertised concurrently with two other positions:
0048273: SkyHopper Research Associate – Project Manager, and
0048274: SkyHopper Research Associate – Systems Engineer
Applicants wishing to be considered for multiple positions must indicate so in the cover letter, and address the additional selection criteria.
