The School of Physics at the University of Melbourne (UoM) is seeking a Research Associate, with a background in aerospace engineering and/or development of instrumentation for nano-satellites, to join the SkyHopper Space Telescope mission team.

The SkyHopper Research Associate – Systems Engineer will serve as the spacecraft-level Systems Engineer for the project. The successful applicant will carry out research to develop the overall mission design, based on combining commercial TRL9 avionics and bus components with a custom designed and developed science payload. The spacecraft-level Systems Engineer will also coordinate the definition of interfaces between subsystems and work with the Principal Investigator and the science management committee to ensure that the overall spacecraft design meets the science requirements of the mission.

The University of Melbourne provides a wide range of opportunities for research collaborations within the School and the Faculty of Science. The successful applicant will be expected to undertake some administrative tasks for the School.

To be considered for the role, the appointee will have a Masters degree, completed a PhD or equivalent in Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Astrophysics, Planetary Science, or a related area with focus on spacecraft development.  You will have expertise in spacecraft Systems Engineering, or similar projects for scope and complexity, demonstrated through academic and/or professional experience.  You will demonstrate potential ability to obtain a license to access ITAR-restricted technical-data and hardware.  You will also demonstrate the ability to engage with relevant professional and industry bodies and stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships.  It would be desirable to have experience contributing effectively to a (nanosatellite) space mission.
