Summer Intern, Drug Product Analytical Development

Cambridge, MA
April 18 2019
Organization Type
Summer Intern, Drug Product Analytical Development

The Role:

The intern will work in the Drug Product Analytical Development (DPAD) group and be involved with characterizing and developing methodology to understand the physical and chemical properties of Moderna's Drug Product. Part of the project will be to optimize and increase the throughput of existing assays (e.g. HPLC, plate assays) for process development support. Another part of the project will be to develop new technology and data analysis methods to streamline the existing analytical workflow. Biology, Chemistry, and Biochemistry majors are encouraged to apply.

Here's What You'll Do:
  • Develop novel analytical tools to probe the physical and chemical properties of lipid nanoparticles
  • Optimize and prequalify analytical techniques to support early stage process development and formulation design
  • Collaborate with internal groups in chemistry, formulations, delivery, drug substance analytical, and in vitro biology
  • Communicate research and development findings internally on a regular basis and in a timely fashion
  • Generate high quality documentation including electronic notebook entries, standard operating procedures, and technical memorandums

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table:
  • Currently enrolled Junior or Senior with a minimum GPA of 3.4, majoring in biology, chemistry, or engineering (preferred)
  • Previous co-op or internship experience (preferred)
  • Basic laboratory skills and ability to quickly learn new techniques
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Fundamental understanding of biochemical and biophysical concepts and analytical instrumentation (e.g. HPLC, GC, CE, MS, UV)
  • Ability to document laboratory work and manipulate data in software such as Excel and GraphPad
  • Curious, eager, open to learning, and independent

Here's What We'll Bring to the Table:
  • Daily on-site catered lunches
  • Free parking, monthly subway pass or a subsidized commuter rail pass
  • Healthcare coverage includes medical offered through BCBS (HMO/PPO), dental, and vision offered through VSP
  • Accrued paid vacation

Why join Moderna

At Moderna, we believe messenger RNA, or mRNA, is the "software of life." Every cell in the body uses mRNA to provide real-time instructions to make the proteins necessary to drive all aspects of biology, including in human health and disease. Given its essential role, we believe mRNA could be used to create a new category of medicines with significant potential to improve the lives of patients.

Headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., Moderna currently has strategic alliances for development programs with AstraZeneca, Plc. and Merck, Inc., as well as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Defense; and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), a division of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Moderna has been ranked in the top ten of Science's list of top biopharma industry employers for the past four years. To learn more, visit .
