The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is one of the 19 national institutions of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres e.V. (HGF). Around 950 employees carry out basic research and development work in close cooperation with national and international research institutions, research-oriented clinics and economic and public institutions.

At the Institute of Biomaterial Science some 100 scientists research multi-functional, polymer-based biomaterials for applications in regernative medicine. Their implants and active agent delivery systems provide customised properties and functions to restore impaired body functions.

Postdoc (m/f/d)Physics of Cell-interactive Polymeric Materials

code no. 2019/B 10
The place of employment is Teltow (near Berlin, Germany).

The Institute of Biomaterial Science in Teltow of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht and Berlin Brandenburg Centre for Regenerative Therapies (BCRT) invite applications for a Postdoc (m/f/d) Physics of Cell-interactive Polymeric Materials with a focus on the development of physical models describing the interaction between instructive polymeric biomaterials and cells. This is initially a 2-years fixed term contract.

Your tasks:
A primary objective of the position will be the development of (computational) physical models describing and pridicting cellular effects induced by polymeric biomaterials providing specific physical cues (e.g. local mechanics, topography, morphology, curvature or actuation capability) with particular focus on stimuli-sensitive polymer materials (i.e. shape memory polymers).

Your profile:
You have a Ph.D. degree and experience in polymer physics, physics, biophysics, material engineering, computational science, or related fields. You have experience in physics of polymer materials and creating descriptive/predictive physical models as well as computational design models for polymer-based structures, all documented by a strong academic record. You have a proven ability in programming in both scripting and compiled languages (e.g. C, C++, Phyton), skills in algorithmic and implementation aspects, numerical analysis, code parallelization and code profiling. You have as well a profund knowledge in statistical, continuum and finite element mechanics and appropriate skills in software engineering using state-of-the-art object-oriented languages. You are eager to collaborate with chemist, material scientists, biologists, electrical engineers and researchers from other disciplines and to transfer your ideas to applications based research.

We offer:

  • multinational work environment with colleagues from more than 50 nations
  • extensive options of vocational training (i. a. expert seminars, language courses)
  • flexible working hours and various models to ensure the compatibility of family and career
  • excellent infrastructure, including labs, research vessel, computer cluster, scientific in-house library as well as modern work spaces
  • an appropriate salary related to the German public tariff (TV-AVH) plus the usual social benefits for the public employment sector

The promotion of equal rights is a matter of course for us. Severely disabled persons and those equaling severely disabled persons who are equally suitable for the position will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.
