We are looking for a science leader who has the experience, publication record, international linkages and passion to make a significant contribution to invasive and native wildlife species management in New Zealand and internationally.

About the opportunity

Managing invasive species and protecting indigenous biodiversity is an essential part of New Zealand's biosecurity system, and Manaaki Whenua-Landcare Research is the primary provider of research related to post-border biosecurity and wildlife conservation and restoration ecology. The Wildlife Ecology and Management team carries out research on both managing invasive mammals and on the conservation management and outcomes for indigenous wildlife populations, and the team's research capacity is under increasing demand. Consequently, we seek an experienced Scientist who can lead research and make a significant contribution to conservation/restoration ecology and/or invasive species management.

Finding solutions to wildlife management problems increasingly requires the integration of multiple disciplines along with new approaches, that up to now, may not have been well researched in the context of conservation or invasive species management. We are seeking novel thinking, both disciplinary and strategically, that could redirect wildlife management research.

This full-time, open-term (permanent) position is based in Lincoln (near Christchurch) or Auckland and reports to the Science Team Leader, Wildlife Ecology and Management team.

About you

In this role, you will work closely with Dr Chris Jones (Wildlife Management and Conservation Ecology Portfolio Leader) to support development of the wider research portfolio to lead a priority area within its scope. The role is supported by experienced field technicians, quantitative Ecologists (Modellers), and will have access to a captive animal facility and toxicology and molecular laboratories if required.

The position description reflects the fundamental requirements for the role. Based on these, we invite you to enhance the description by telling us how you and your research could make a genuine difference to wildlife management, both in New Zealand and internationally.

The detail in your cover letter needs to address issues of science excellence, possible collaborations and funding sources, international linkages, indigenous knowledge, and your unique perception of priority areas of research. In addition, tell us how your experience, publication record, and work with end-users will contribute to this position.
