The University of Calgary, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM), is seeking applicants for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Arctic One Health: Healthy Animals and Healthy Communities in a Changing Arctic.  In accordance with the regulations set for Tier 1 Canada Research Chairs (, the candidate will be an outstanding and innovative researcher who has demonstrated research success with international recognition in the field of wildlife health, human-animal health dynamics, or both, in a changing Arctic. Nominees for Tier 1 Chair positions must generally be full professors or associate professors who are expected to be promoted to the full professor level within one or two years of the nomination.

The Tier 1 CRC nominee should have established an internationally recognized and externally funded research program with an emphasis on the Arctic, promoting ‘Healthy Animals and Healthy Communities’. The CRC will take a One Health approach, working with Indigenous communities and bridging knowledge systems, to detect, study, and mitigate the impacts of emerging animal health issues on wildlife conservation, human health, food security and community welfare. The successful applicant will work with a dynamic group of researchers at the University of Calgary engaged in a number of One Health initiatives developed to address questions related to ecosystem and public health,  climate change and wildlife health. A key linkage will be with the Arctic Institute of North America, at the University of Calgary, and other Arctic Research programs across Canada and Internationally. The position also provides an excellent opportunity to interact with other established research groups in the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine, Science, Arts and Medicine ( and including the One Health Research Group which was developed as part of the Faculty’s Strategic Plan. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching  in the DVM and/or graduate programs in wildlife health, Indigenous engagement, infectious disease and/or other areas according to their expertise.

Qualifications include a PhD and DVM or equivalent professional degree. An outstanding and externally well funded research program working at the interface of climate change, wildlife health and conservation, and domestic animal health is required, ideally related to the well-being of northern Indigenous communities. A track record of capacity-building, knowledge translation, and working collaboratively and effectively with Indigenous communities, is an asset. A successful track record in graduate student and postdoctoral training is required. Appointment will be at a rank and salary commensurate with experience.

UCVM has approximately 70 faculty members, 130 staff, 125 DVM students, 110 graduate students, 30 post-doctoral fellows, and 15 advanced clinical trainees. UCVM’s DVM program provides a comprehensive general veterinary education to approximately 30-32 students per year. The program is an integrated core-elective program, with enhanced educational opportunities in defined areas that combine discipline-based courses with extensive on-campus and off-campus experiential learning. UCVM is a research-intensive faculty with expanding research, graduate education, and advanced clinical trainee programs.
