The University of Manitoba invites applications for a Canada Research Chair Tier 2, a tenured or tenure-track position at the rank of assistant or associate professor, in the area of systems biology and inflammation relevant to human health and disease.
The Government of Canada has established the CRC program to enable Canadian universities to foster world class research excellence. The proposed CRC aligns with the University's strategic research plan that identifies “Fundamental Research” and “Integrative Research in Health and Well-Being” as targeted areas.
The Chair will be a member of the Department of Internal Medicine and the Manitoba Centre for Proteomics and Systems Biology. The Centre is a leader in the promotion and practice of systems biology and proteomics in Manitoba and offers high content analytical capabilities in proteomics in conjunction with other advanced “omics” resources at the University of Manitoba. The Centre membership consists of basic and clinician scientists with established Tri-council funded research programs examining basic and applied biomedical problems. The Centre offers an exceptional collaborative environment for the development and translation of new approaches to the study of human disease. It is expected that the candidate will establish an original, innovative systems based research program. The candidate’s research program should employ multiomic approaches to describe processes relevant to acute/chronic inflammatory diseases (e.g., autoimmunity, transplantation, infection). The candidate will establish a laboratory based research program in systems analysis employing computational and experimental approaches. These approaches may employ model systems but the goal of the program is to establish applications relevant to human systems.
As a Chair holder, the candidate will be expected to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers. A critical aspect of these expectations will be the provision of teaching and mentoring to colleagues and their trainees at the University.
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. with several years of post-doctoral experience in the application of high content analytical approaches for the analysis of biological systems of potential biomedical relevance. They will have sustained academic productivity as demonstrated by publications and presentations. In addition, the candidate will have a superior record of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows (taking into account different practices in the relevant field or discipline).
A Tier 2 CRC Nomination will be submitted soon after a successful candidate has been selected. Chairs are awarded by the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat after a rigorous evaluation, and award decisions are expected in the fall. The appointment will be conditional on a successful Canada Research Chair nomination.
Applicants must be exceptional emerging scholars with less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher since obtaining their terminal degree at the time of nomination. Tier 2 Chairs are valued at $100,000 per year for 5 years with an option to renew once. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) will have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program's Tier 2 justification process.
