Position Description

The Biological Sciences Group of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Computational Microbiome Scientist with demonstrated expertise in predictive analysis and modeling of microbiome populations.  You will provide intellectual contributions and leadership to an interdisciplinary team to tackle cutting edge challenges in microbiome science, leveraging diverse data modalities to explore the microbiome and host-microbiome-environment interactions.  Your work will reveal new insights into microbiome dynamics and functions, leading to knowledge that will inform an integrated experimental approach for additional microbiome study and engineering.

As a computational microbiome scientist…
•Your primary role will be to lead and support interdisciplinary teams in modeling and analyzing microbial communities, engineering microbiome populations, and analyzing complex interactions between host and microbial populations – all for human health and national security applications;
•You will lead research efforts by building diverse and high-performing teams, providing technical mentorship of staff, managing project execution, and communicating key findings internally across teams and externally to sponsors;
•You will contribute to a culture of intellectual curiosity, innovation, collaboration, integrity, and technical excellence;
•You will participate in business development activities, including sponsor engagement, concept and proposal development, and communication both within APL and the external research community;
•You will contribute to vision and strategy development and execution.

You meet our minimum qualifications if you have:

•Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Computational Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, or relevant field
•Five years professional experience in Computational Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, or relevant field
•Demonstrated expertise in modeling and analyzing biological phenomena, including predictive analysis and modeling of host/microbiome interactions
•Expertise in statistical methods and data analysis
•Proficiency in analysis and integration of diverse data modalities (e.g., metagenomics, metabolomics, etc.)
•Theoretical understanding of microbiome metabolism, dynamics, and host/environmental interactions
•Strong communication and collaboration skills; ability to lead and contribute to teams from any position

Additionally, the following skills are desired in the successful candidate:

•Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, or relevant field
•Competency in clinical data science
