Two Full Professors for the Cluster Plant Developmental Biology

We are looking for

Both chair groups share developmental biology as common research field but have a distinct focus:

Professor and Chair Cell and Developmental Biology (CDB)

Chair 1: Cell and Developmental Biology (CDB)

CDB studies the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie cell fate specification and organ formation in plants. Emphasis is on the formation and maintenance of stem cells, the regulation of cell polarity and cell fate determination and their role in multicellular morphogenesis. These developmental processes are controlled by internal genetic, hormonal and molecular factors, but also external (abiotic) cues, (e.g. gravity, day-length or temperature) direct plant development.

Professor and Chair Developmental biology of Biotic and Environmental Interactions (DBE)

Chair 2: Developmental biology of Biotic and Environmental Interactions (DBE)

DBE studies how plant developmental programs and related molecular and cellular processes are affected and respond to interacting organisms and/or how such responses have evolved. Because responses to the biotic environment are affected by abiotic cues like nutrient availability, DBE is also interested in molecular developmental responses controlled by nutrient signalling. To study this, the emphasis is on the dynamic responses and altered development of plant organs, rather than physiological responses or (a)biotic factors.

As professors leading this new cluster you will have the opportunity to strengthen existing research and develop new research lines in close collaboration with each other. In addition, you will play an active role in education at the undergraduate and graduate level. You will also give new impulses to improve the content of our courses, our teaching methods, and the coherence of the education programmes in which we take part.

We ask

You are an internationally recognized researcher with a strong, relevant track record in publications, excellence in teaching, grant fundraising experience and strong leadership capabilities who will provide the group with a supportive working environment to young and senior academics.

  • you are a scholar with a PhD degree in the plant sciences and you have a proven scientific track record of recognised international quality in the field of plant developmental biology;
  • you have an inspiring, long-term vision on the development of this field;
  • your great interpersonal and networking skills allow you to establish and enlarge your broad international network;
  • as an inspiring teacher and supervisor for students of diverse backgrounds, with the ability to develop courses at Bachelor, Master, and PhD level, you are interested to innovate teaching methods with your vision;
  • you are able to lead professionals in a collegial and unifying leadership style characterized by a passion to develop people, to build teams, and to create synergy.

We offer

We are a dynamic and inspiring international organisation with a large number of interdisciplinary projects all over the world. A strong commitment to teaching and fundamental research, combined with innovative applied research, creates a rich learning environment. Our students – the innovators of tomorrow – also benefit from first-class research and educational facilities.

Besides a competitive salary, we offer a number of additional benefits, such as an end-of-year extra month’s salary, a holiday allowance and a pension plan with the Dutch pension fund for government and education. Applicants from abroad moving to the Netherlands may qualify for a special tax relief, by which 30% of their salary is exempt from tax for the first five years. Have a look at https://www.wur.nl/en/Jobs/Moving-to-the-Netherlands.htm

For detailed information about the remuneration package feel free to contact Jacqueline Huisman MSc, Sr Recruiter via +31 (0) 621 563413.

Coming from abroad

Wageningen is a centre for research and entrepreneurship. The themes we deal with are relevant to everyone around the world and Wageningen, therefore, has a large international community and a lot to offer to international employees. It is a historic university town of about 36,000 residents in the central Netherlands. The academic community hails from more than 100 countries, giving the town a lively, international feel. Our highly qualified team of advisors on Dutch immigration procedures will help you with the visa application procedures for yourself and, if applicable, for your family. A specialized staffing agency will help your partner to find a job.

The Wageningen University & Research's International Community contains practical information about what we do to support international employees and students coming to Wageningen. Information can be found on https://www.wur.nl/en/International-students-and-staff.htm

Equal opportunities employer

We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons regardless of their race, sex, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation or age.

We are

Delivering a substantial contribution to the quality of life. That's our focus – each and every day. Within our domain of good and safe food & food production, food security and a healthy living environment, we search for answers to issues affecting society – such as sustainable food production, climate change and alternative energy. Of course, we don’t do this alone. Every day, 6500 people work on ‘the quality of life’, turning ideas into reality, on a global scale.

Could you be one of these people? We give you the space you need.

For further information about working at Wageningen University & Research, take a look at http://www.wur.nl/career.

The scientific quality of Wageningen University is affirmed by the prominent position we occupy in international rankings and citation indexes. Students have been voting Wageningen University & Research as the best university in the Netherlands for fourteen years in a row.

Wageningen University & Research is looking for two full professors (0.8 - 1.0 fte) to lead the chair groups Cell and Developmental Biology and Developmental biology of Biotic and Environmental Interactions that constitute the newly formed cluster Plant Developmental Biology as part of the Plant Sciences Group of our University, one of the leading universities on food, health and environment.

The cluster Plant Developmental Biology (PDB) studies the development of plant cells, tissues and organs and their contribution to the development of the plant as a whole. Understanding the basic cellular processes and molecular mechanisms that underlie developmental programs from cell to organism are key for PDB. This includes, but is not restricted to signal transduction, dynamics of intracellular components, transcription regulation (gene networks), molecular interactions and the influence of extra-cellular cues on development.
