The Role:

Moderna Infectious Disease, is seeking an exceptionally talented and experienced Associate Director to drive the Immunology Discovery research to support advancement of Moderna's mRNA technology and vaccine pipeline. She/He will be part of a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary team and will lead the immunology discovery efforts to enable mRNA vaccines and therapeutics in the infectious disease (ID) area . He/She will also explore innovative approaches to exploit the full potential of mRNA for novel vaccines. The successful candidate will drive immunology research, design and execute experiments, and manage internal and external collaborations. Applicants should be outstanding team members and have extensive experience in immunology and project leadership. The ability to effectively communicate across internal multi-disciplinary teams and with external partners is required. The candidate will need to lead and supervise its team and manage multiple immunology and vaccine projects in a fast-move and results-oriented environment.

Here's What You'll Do:
  • Work closely with the Moderna ID Head of Research to plan, initiate and lead research strategy for immunology research activities
  • Manage multiple projects in the immunology research involving cross-functional collaboration within Moderna ID and across Moderna ecosystem. Provide scientific expertise, guidance and strategy to successfully bring discovery programs to Go/No Go decisions
  • Communicate clearly objectives and strategy to team members and insure that objectives are achieved within the agreed timelines
  • Contribute to patents, publication and technical reports used in regulatory filings
  • Lead a team of immunologists to develop, optimize, validate and execute in vitro and in vivo research to enable the use of mRNA to for vaccine programs
  • Effectively represent the company at scientific conferences and business development opportunities though presentation of scientific material
  • Develop and manage relationship across Moderna and with external collaborators. Be capable of communicating effectively, interpret data and discuss project progress internally, with academic collaborators and external CROs

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table:
  • A Ph.D. degree in immunology with 5-10 years drug discovery experience at pharmaceutical, biotech and at least 4+ years at the principal scientist level or equivalent experience
  • Solid background and training in his or her own fields of studies and in conducting research using the latest drug discovery technologies and advances in science
  • Solid experience in adaptive and innate immunity and viral vaccines immunology and development
  • Strong experience in modeling immune response (ex vivo and in vivo) and in immunological techniques
  • Managerial capabilities and good knowledge and experience in biologics and track record of making contributions to advance ID vaccines from concept to proof-of concept in-vivo onto clinical candidate
  • Ability to develop and deliver clear and concise presentations for both internal and external meetings
  • Candidate will be curious in exploring new path for drug discovery, bold in proposing creative experimental designs and ideas. Will work collaboratively with multifunctional teams and will be relentless in pursuing successful outcomes
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
