Cardiovascular Research Center Director

The University of South Carolina is expanding its efforts in Health Sciences education and research particularly in areas that significantly impact the residents of the state.  Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and is a prominent health concern in South Carolina, thus, cardiovascular disease is a major research focus at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.  The Cardiovascular Translational Research Center (CTRC) has been established to promote integrated research into the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease.  A search for a funded and productive translational research investigator to serve as Director of the CTRC has been initiated at the School of Medicine. The successful candidate will be a federally funded scientist (MD, PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent) with a strong background in cardiovascular research and demonstrable experience and/or potential for leading programmatic, multidisciplinary research teams. The successful candidate will partner with other researchers at the University of South Carolina and build upon the strong existing ties with cardiovascular physicians and surgeons to foster new research collaborations targeting cardiovascular disease processes affecting South Carolina citizens including:

Ischemic heart disease, particularly as it relates to obesity and diabetes

Heart failure including its prevention, diagnosis and treatment

Vascular disease including its prevention, diagnosis and treatment

Biotechnology, particularly the translation of biomaterials, drugs, devices and diagnostics for prevention, diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease

The University of South Carolina is the only comprehensive research institution in South Carolina housing its own medical, law, business, public health, and engineering schools, as well as academic disciplines typically found at undergraduate institutions. The University of South Carolina School of Medicine has strong collaborative ties with the College of Engineering and Computing including the Biomedical Engineering program, Arnold School of Public Health, College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Pharmacy. The School of Medicine, in partnership with the Prisma Health System and the Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center, has a vibrant cardiovascular surgical program and a newly established Cardiology Fellowship Program.  Facilitating collaborations, the School of Medicine houses state-of-the-art whole animal imaging and surgical facilities, and a core Instrumentation Resource Facility specializing in microscopy and imaging at all levels, from light to electron microscopy, fluorescent and confocal microscopy.  The successful candidate will expand the integration of the CTRC with diverse units across the university campus.
