The Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences invites applications for a

PROFESSORSHIP (W2/W3)
FOR CLIMATE STATISTICS AND EXTREMES

commencing as soon as possible, ref. no. 2299.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate is expected to teach and conduct fundamental research on the statistics of dynamic climate processes, including climate extremes in the atmosphere, ocean, and cryosphere. Outstanding cross-disciplinary research accomplishments and extensive experience in the conception and implementation of research projects are expected, e.g. in the field of climate extremes (incl. extreme value statistics), the description of uncertainties in climate predictions, or the detection and attribution of climate anomalies using model simulations and observations. Tasks include participation in interdisciplinary research within the Cluster of Excellence CliCCS and cooperation with the institutions involved (incl. Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Helmholtz-Centre Geesthacht, German Climate Computing Center). Furthermore, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in research projects at the Center of Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN), or to initiate new research activities.

Section 12 subsection 7 sentence 2 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) applies.

Requirements:

Academic qualifications and additional requirements as specified in Section 15 HmbHG.

Additional criteria:

Applicants are expected to have international research experience as well as a successful track record in acquiring external funding and carrying out cross-disciplinary externally funded projects.

The University places particular emphasis on the quality of teaching. The successful candidate is expected to teach both discipline-specific and interdisciplinary aspects of the subject in climate-related degree programs in the Department of Earth Sciences. Applicants are expected to provide details of their teaching experience and objectives.

Following hearings, selected candidates will be assessed to ascertain skills in the areas of management and human resources.
