Master’s-level Technical Position in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics

The Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology (EGSB) team includes a varied group of experimentalists and computational scientists within the Environmental Laboratory of the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC). Our mission is to provide innovative solutions to complex biological problems using a comprehensive approach that is both multiscale and multidisciplinary.

EGSB is currently accepting CVs/resumes and portfolios for a 1-year Master’s-level technical internship through the ORISE program in support of our computational biology and bioinformatics projects. The applicant will assist in the development of biological and bio-inspired models and analyses as a part of the US Army’s Environmental Quality and Installations Understanding the Environment as a Threat work unit. The goal of this funded project is to quantify the risks to mobility in urban environments from exposure to toxic industrial chemicals (TICs) by predicting the potential effects to human health. Major tasks include database development and model development and execution using Army high performance computer (HPC) assets (https://www.erdc.hpc.mil/index.html). Additional tasks include bioinformatics data mining and -omics data analyses.

Successful applicants will have obtained a Master’s degree in a field indicative of mathematical or computational training, such as biophysics, mathematics, chemical or biological engineering, bioinformatics, computational biology, among others; or will exhibit the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to code mathematical models, develop databases, and perform data mining and data analyses. Knowledge of C/C++ and Python programming is required, as well as a basic knowledge of genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and next-gen sequencing technologies.  The incumbent will work with an experienced and diverse team of Ph.D.-level scientists with expertise in theoretical physics, bioinformatics, genetics, molecular biology, and toxicology. Salaries of qualified applicants may be expected to range from $55,000 to $65,000 USD, dependent upon experience. To obtain more information, send or email a resume/CV, a small portfolio of code examples, and a brief cover letter explaining your interests and experience.

The Environmental Laboratory (EL) is one of seven DOD-funded laboratories within the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, which is part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (http://www.erdc.usace.army.mil).
