Postdoctoral Fellow in Microbial Genomics
Department of Health and Human Services
National Institutes of Health
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
Position Description
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) conducts and supports a global program of research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. The Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Microbiology (LCIM) within the NIAID Division of Intramural Research (DIR) is seeking candidates for a postdoctoral fellow position within the newly created Bacterial Pathogenesis and Antimicrobial Resistance Unit. This position will offer a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of clinical infectious disease, pathogen genomics, and computational biology. We use a combination of genomics and proteomics to study bacterial pathogens, with a focus on intra-host bacterial evolution in the context of infection in patients with defined immunodeficiency syndromes and on mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance. Access to state-of-the-art sequencing, mass spectrometry, and computational resources is available.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, or a related discipline.
- Proficiency in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data analysis in the Linux/Unix environment and experience with programs such as R/Bioconductor and/or coding in scripting languages such as Python or Perl
- Interest in microbial pathogen evolution and/or antimicrobial resistance
- Ability to conduct research independently and work collaboratively with other scientists
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with standard molecular biology techniques, including NGS library preparation
- Experience with microbiology and microbial genomics
To apply, send curriculum vitae, bibliography, three references who may be contacted for letters, and a short statement about your skill set and clinical research interests (no more than two pages) to Dr. John Dekker at john.dekker@nih.gov.
