The Division of Intramural Research of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Research Triangle Park (RTP), North Carolina is recruiting a Staff Scientist for a Metabolomics Lead within the Mass Spectrometry Research and Support Group. The NIEHS is located in the Research Triangle Park, a world renowned academic research center in North Carolina.

The Mass Spectrometry Research and Support Group (MSRSG) is a centralized, shared research resource that provides expert consultation and access to state-of-the-art mass spectrometry technologies through collaborations and support to the scientific and clinical investigators within the Institute. This facility is a discrete unit and has dedicated personnel, equipment, and space for operations.

We are seeking an experienced scientist with a proven track record in metabolomics utilizing mass spectrometry. The Metabolomics Lead is to recommend, develop and/or implement innovative mass spectrometry-based metabolomic analysis methods to support the research needs of the investigators of the NIEHS. A demonstrated mastery of mass spectrometry is required; an expert understanding of cellular metabolism is highly preferred. The Metabolomics Lead will work in conjunction with the existing MSRSG staff to import and implement novel small molecule mass spectrometry approaches. The Metabolomics Lead must also maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of the field and be skilled in preparing scientific presentations and publications. Qualified candidates must be a small molecule mass spectrometry expert with 5 or more years of experience operating and maintaining HPLC and UPLC systems as well as a variety of mass spectrometers, e.g. instruments based on quadrupole-ToF, triple quadrupole, quadrupole ion trap, and orbitrap technologies; experience in optimization and of sample preparation and associated biochemical methods such as extraction, derivatization, purification, and chromatographic separations; extensive experience in setting up computing environments, including developing pipelines for analysis, visualization and interpretation of complex omics data; demonstrated experience and expertise, as documented by peer-reviewed publications, of targeted and untargeted metabolic profiling; and experience training individuals at the post-doctoral, graduate and/or undergraduate level.

A Staff Scientist is a NIH employee generally appointed to a time-limited, renewable position. Staff Scientists often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the laboratory. The Staff Scientist in this position will conduct facility driven research and mentor other laboratory staff.

Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Biochemistry/Chemistry/Bioanalytical Chemistry/Biology and have extensive experience with MS-based metabolomic analyses. In addition, a proven record of supervisory experience/mentoring is highly desirable. Experience in the biological underpinnings of metabolism is highly preferred.
