Faculty Position in Human Neuroimaging and Technology Development 

Virginia Tech (VT) is poised to make significant advances in understanding plasticity of the brain and its resultant manifestation as adaptive behavior by building trans-disciplinary teams and employing state-of-the-art technologies to address related themes and questions in the areas of decision-making, physical and psychological trauma and development across the lifespan. Discoveries made in the Adaptive Brain and Behavior (ABB) Destination Area (https://www.provost.vt.edu/destination-areas/da-overview/da-brain.html) will have an impact on key health, economic, and social issues confronting our region, country and the world, including performance, wellness, and treatment of brain/behavior disorders, resilience, and health policy. ABB research will be paired with an innovative curriculum introducing students to principles of the brain-behavior relationship and its impact on community, health and the human condition. VT has already made and will continue to make substantial investment into these areas to transform the university into a national and international destination area for scientists, students, and inventors interested in ABB.

As part of this initiative, we are recruiting a faculty member at the assistant professor level in human neuroimaging including technology development. Areas of particular interest include the development and application of novel recording methods for use in human neuroimaging work.  Such novel approaches may include optically pumped magnetometry, deep learning approaches to signal classification and detection, and the interaction of both with BOLD neuroimaging.

Competitive salary, space, and start-up package will be provided. The successful candidate will join a collaborative and highly successful group of investigators with similar research interests at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute (https://research.vtc.vt.edu/) in the institute’s Center for Human Neuroscience Research. The research institute provides an intellectually vibrant and technologically advanced environment that includes 21 brain research teams, state of the art multi-modal imaging facilities ranging from super resolution molecular and cellular imaging to multiple human MRIs, magnetically shielded space for optically pumped magnetometry measurements in the human brain during behavior and behavioral testing facilities.

Applicants should have an earned doctorate, postdoctoral training and a demonstrated record of research excellence in development and application of novel recording methods for use in human neuroimaging. They should also demonstrate strong potential for developing an innovative research program that already has or is likely to attract sustained extramural funding and should be able to collaborate with other faculty members at the research institute as well as others across the Virginia Tech campus.  In addition to a primary mission of high quality research, it is expected that the successful candidate will also contribute to the educational/training mission by participating in graduate teaching and mentoring of undergraduates and medical students in their research projects. A tenure-track appointment in an appropriate academic department will be provided for the successful candidate.

The research institute and the adjacent medical school are located in Roanoke in the picturesque Roanoke Valley midway between Washington, DC and Charlotte, NC with 28 research groups with over 300 research and support team members with a research grant portfolio of over $125M.  Prospective faculty members can draw from an outstanding and diverse pool of graduate students to work with them in their research program. Virginia Tech has over 6,000 graduate students and offers several graduate programs in biomedically-related disciplines, including the Translational Biology, Medicine, and Heath Ph.D. program that has neuroscience and as one of its tracks (http://www.tbmh.vt.edu).
