This is a 2-year fixed term appointment, renewable, 100% FTE.

The Division of Interventional Radiology in the Radiology Department and the Stanford University School of Medicine is seeking a Deputy Director of Research with the goal of augmenting interventional radiology’s clinical research program and enhancing its Learning Health System. 

Stanford’s Division of Interventional Radiology has a 4-decade history of developing minimally invasive procedures to meet unmet medical needs for patients world-wide. Numerous patents, devices, innovative procedures and companies have resulted from the work of the faculty members in the Division.

Currently, the division consists of 8 faculty members (7 MDs, 1 MD/ PhD). Within 18 months, there will be 11 faculty members. Additionally, there are 6 interventional radiology clinical fellows, residents and medical students. All of whom contribute to the research mission.

Job duties and responsibilities include:


Scientific Collaborator: 

  • Assist in grant writing big proposals, industry collaboration, and clinical research.
  • Liaison within the Radiology Department among other Deputy Directors and Vice Chair of Research 
  • Increase funding opportunities
  • Maintain centralize grant resources

Partner with the faculty on various initiatives:

  • Evangelize the Interventional Radiology Research program through managing the content on the website and promotion and outreach programs 
  • Philanthropy efforts 


  • 10-20% initiate own ideas
  • Serve as a resource to help on-board new lab participants such as medical students, residents, fellows, and visiting scholars.
  • Space planning 
  • Data sharing



  • MD, PhD or MD/PhD
  • At least 5 years of experience since graduate degree
  • Experience writing federal grants

Applicants should have an outstanding record of collaborative clinical and data science research with an emphasis on biomedical informatics, clinical informatics, and clinical research. Specifically, the successful candidate should have a track record of working with a diverse set of patient-derived data sets (i.e., outcomes data, clinical data, imaging data, genomics, proteomics, claims data, cost data, quality data). The ideal candidate should have an MD/PhD or PhD in one of the following: biomedical informatics, biostatistics, clinical informatics, epidemiology, or computer science with a strong background of computer programming, database design, and working with large datasets. 

It is expected that this candidate will partner with interventional radiology faculty and develop an externally funded research agenda. This will entail skills in grant writing, study design, data acquisition, data analysis, data visualization, machine learning, predictive modeling, survival analysis and treatment decision support. 

Criteria for the position include demonstrated ability to obtain peer-reviewed research funding or the potential to secure such funding, excellence in collaborative clinical/data science research.
