Assistant Research Professor, Plant Science

The Pennsylvania State University`s Department of Plant Science seeks an Assistant Research Professor to work on two projects that require expertise in meteorology, geophysical and agricultural sciences as applied to environments in Eastern Africa. Project 1 is part of the larger project MINT (model integration), funded by the World Modelers program by DARPA, and Project 2 is part of the Transformative project funded by NIH. The incumbent will have responsibility for assembling and analyzing inputs and outputs needed to run agroecosystem simulations models in South Sudan, the current focus of the project, and other regions as the project shifts attention to different and yet unknown case studies. For the NIH project, the candidate will provide expertise in preparing geophysical and environmental data sets for use in infection studies in Africa to develop prediction algorithms required to assess the spatiotemporal risks of infections from environmental variables and to aid infectious disease surveillance. We are interested in a candidate that will join two dynamic groups using geospatial data for assessments of agricultural and health outputs, currently focused on Uganda and South Sudan. The incumbent will work under the supervision of Dr. Armen Kemanian (Plant Science) and Dr. Steven Schiff (Center for Neural Engineering). The position will be located at the University Park Campus of The Pennsylvania State University. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the opportunity for renewal contingent on the availability of funding. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Meteorology, Agrometeorology or related discipline(s) completed by the starting date, and experience with satellite derived weather products, historical climate analysis, application of crop models, and expertise in geostatistics. Given the geographical interests of the projects and the applied nature of the prediction systems, applicants must have field experience with agricultural systems and socio-economic systems of Sub Saharan Africa. At the academic level, a proven record of successful grant writing and cooperation in multidisciplinary teams demonstrable with pertinent academic publications is required. Experience programing in R, Python, FORTRAN and other languages is highly desirable.
