Assistant Professor - Data Sciences in Biomedical Engineering (BE-HDSI-CMM)

Data Science has emerged as an area central to advances in our understanding of nature, improving the quality life and a healthy society. Data collection, stewardship and analyses are already integrated into the infrastructure for commerce, healthcare, governance and education. These ubiquitous practical uses of digital data have raised awareness of the need to further develop the underlying scientific and technological basis for understanding and exploiting data.

UC San Diego established the Halicioglu Data Science Institute to address this imminent need. HDSI is a new strategic academic institute tasked with hosting and coordination of Data Science research and education activities at the University of California, San Diego. Among HDSI academic programs are the Data Science major and minor currently with nearly 600 undergraduate students.

The University of California, San Diego, Department of Bioengineering, the Halicioglu Data Science Institute and the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine invite applications for a tenure track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. The Department of Bioengineering in the Jacobs School of Engineering, the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine in the School of Medicine and campus-wide HDSI are committed to building an excellent, diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student body (http://www.jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/diversity/). Candidates with experience with or willingness to engage in activities that contribute to diversity and inclusion are especially encouraged to apply.

A PhD or advancement to candidacy in data sciences, bioengineering or related disciplines is required for this position. Successful applicants will be expected to teach courses in UC San Diego’s Bioengineering, Bioengineering/Biotechnology, Bioengineering/BioSystems or Bioengineering/Bioinformatics and Data Sciences undergraduate degree majors and graduate degree programs.

Applicants are expected to establish a vigorous program of high-quality federally funded research that focuses on biomedical data sciences.

We are expecting to recruit exceptional individuals to maintain preeminence in the development of data sciences, methods, technologies and applications with:

  • Expertise and a deep background in genomic, molecular, cellular, organismal data sciences and/or integrative analysis and design, in areas pertinent to data sciences;
  • A strong research interest in bringing data science and learning approaches to human diseases and innovative solutions to biomedical applications; and
  • The ability to develop synergistic interactions with researchers in the School of Medicine, Jacobs School of Engineering, HDSI and related UC San Diego departments, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and/or neighboring institutions.

Successful applicants will complement expertise in the Department of Bioengineering and HDSI and will help reinforce multidisciplinary efforts on campus. The Department of Bioengineering and HDSI enjoy close collaboration with the Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Divisions of Biological and Physical Sciences, Scripps Institution of Oceanography and all of the departments within the Jacobs School of Engineering.

Salary is based on published UC San Diego pay scales and competitive market conditions.
