Assistant Teaching Professor in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (Lecturer PSOE)

You are invited to apply for the post of Assistant Teaching Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at UC Irvine. Teaching Professor Faculty are full members of the Academic Senate. Advancement in this series is based on excellence in teaching, research in your specific discipline and/or pedagogy, and service. You will contribute to the undergraduate teaching mission of the department, in part by teaching in the core microbiology lecture and lab courses. You can also develop new and innovative lab and/or lecture courses. We expect that you will play a prominent role in biology education research, working with teaching and research faculty to develop, implement and assess innovative pedagogical initiatives.

The School is dedicated to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, offering support for the development of courses that incorporate evidence-based teaching practices, active learning strategies, and technologies that facilitate student engagement. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

You are an outstanding scientist who holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology or a broadly related discipline, and who has innovative ideas for implementing and assessing evidence-based improvements to classroom and laboratory instruction. A teaching record at the university level is required (even if not specifically in Microbiology). Candidates with postdoctoral training and/or prior education research experience are preferred. Experience in any of the following areas is particularly sought:

• teaching large undergraduate classes
• applying evidence-based teaching practices including active learning and/or course-based undergraduate research experiences
• using modern instructional technology
• developing effective teaching strategies for diverse student populations

Research Statement (3 pages).
This statement should:

  1. Detail the candidate’s specific area of expertise, with a description of their contributions to the field.
  2. Provide a detailed plan of their future education research program, and how this program might be leveraged to obtain extramural funding.
  3. Indicate how the candidate’s research program will synergize with the research environment at UCI.

Teaching Statement (3 pages).

  1. Indicate the candidate’s teaching experiences to date, including experience with teaching/lecturing to undergraduates/graduate students, or other populations, as well as their areas of interest. This should also include mentorship that they have given to others in the line of research or outreach activities.
  2. Detail the candidate’s teaching approaches and philosophies, as to how they will engage in effective teaching strategies.
  3. Provide evidence of effectiveness of previous teaching.

Diversity Statement (1 page).
