Bioinformatics and Data Visualization Specialist

Computercraft is seeking a forward thinker with experience in the visualization of biological sequence data to work on site at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) to drive the advancement of existing and new sequence analysis and display tools. This individual will develop and oversee implementation of a user-focused vision for NCBI’s existing and new visualization tools that are relied upon daily for sequence alignment and analysis in various resources (e.g., Genome Data Viewer, Gene, BLAST). This work will involve identifying and prioritizing customer needs, conceiving a vision for the advancement of these displays and tools, and developing a plan to guide implementation. The candidate will work in a cross-functional capacity, communicating with scientists and programmers as well as NCBI leadership.

To see the “big picture,” the right candidate will have training in molecular biology, bioinformatics, or a related field and bench research to understand the science; familiarity with graphical displays (genome browsers), aligners, and sequence analysis tools to understand currently available resources; knowledge of how these tools are used by those engaged in basic research, clinical work, and educational efforts to understand the needs of NCBI’s users; and experience in the area of software development to understand the process for transforming ideas into public-facing online products.

Responsibilities

  • Identify existing and new research areas that would benefit from tools and displays offering access to NCBI sequence data
  • Determine community needs with respect to different areas of sequence analysis through attendance at research conferences, analysis of the literature, and the establishment of relationships with biologists and bioinformaticians
  • Lead development teams to transform NCBI’s value-added sequence data into resources serving researchers, educators, and clinicians worldwide
  • Define, evaluate, and apply key performance indicators in the development of sequence display and analysis tools
  • Support program leadership in defining a product vision, a road map, and growth opportunities for sequence data analysis tools

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in molecular biology, bioinformatics, or related field
  • Extensive experience with use, creation, and/or maintenance of a wide range of private, public, and/or commercial tools for sequence analysis and visualization of biological data (e.g., genome browsers, sequence alignment displays, displays for mixed data types or analysis of the output of bioinformatics pipelines)
  • Ability to develop a creative, user-focused vision and communicate that vision to developers
  • Proficiency in problem solving, planning, and time management
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, consensus-building, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in leadership of a product team and collaboration with cross-functional groups of scientists and software developers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated engagement with communities developing or using sequence analysis tools
  • Postdoctoral training
  • Familiarity with Agile development methods
