Experimental Officer

Technical Services

EPSRC Healthcare Technologies Raman Nanotheranostics (RaNT) Programme

The University of Exeter is the fastest rising, fastest growing University in the UK, we offer you the opportunity to join a Russell Group University ranked within the UK top ten and globally recognised amongst its vast range of Sciences.

Technical Services at the University of Exeter is comprised of STEMM-facing research and teaching technical staff. Whilst all operating in a single service our staff work in a wide range of specialist areas such as, Engineering, Physics, Geology, Mining and Minerals, Renewable Energy, Life and Environmental Science, Sports and Health Science, Medical Sciences and Medical Imaging.

We need a team of talented individuals to support our teaching and research, and in training the next generation of top scientists. This EPSRC funded post is available immediately until 30 June 2023.

The post

The EPSRC have funded the University of Exeter, University of Cambridge, London School of Pharmacy (UCL) and the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory to undertake a substantial multi-disciplinary programme of work exploring Raman NanoTheranostics (RaNT).

We propose to develop a new clinical platform technology that combines optical multiplexed disease detection with specific therapeutic selection and monitoring. We will develop innovative nanoparticle (NP) constructs, uniquely safe to the body, coupled with novel readout technologies, capable of detecting signals from depths of >8 cm non-invasively, mediating targeted therapies with light and non-invasively monitoring the efficacy of these and other therapies. This will address a critical clinical need of the provision of accurate and early disease diagnosis accompanied by effective, patient and disease specific therapy.

We wish to recruit a postdoctoral Experimental Officer, based in Exeter, to participate in the above programme and provide day to day management of the RaNT laboratories. The post will be a key part of a team of leading scientists working to develop engineering and physical science solutions to solve the clinical needs in patient specific diagnosis and effective treatment of cancers.

Specifically, we seek to recruit and Experimental Officer to work in our RaNT labs at the interface between the disciplines of physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. In the Exeter labs we will require the EO to work on and support the activities in:

  1. the development of surface enhanced spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SESORS) from a proof of concept to a multiplexed deep tissue imaging tool, able to non-invasively probe functionalised nanoparticle constructs at depths of many cm and to directly monitor the tissue surrounding them.
  2. the development, testing and spectral monitoring of hyperthermia methods using light and magnetic field mediated nanoparticle heating of cells and tissues.
  3. the development of Coherent Raman Scattering (CRS) microscopy to provide intracellular localisation of multiple NP cluster labels (multiplexed imaging) to demonstrate effective cellular uptake by target cells.

The Exeter team includes 3 academics and 3 postdocs working on the above areas as well as PhDs and Masters students. We work together with those at the partner institutions, to develop novel healthcare technologies of the future.

About you

You will:

  • Possess a relevant PhD in Physics, Chemistry or Bioengineering or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study
  • Possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the one of the disciplines and be able rapidly assimilate information to gain a working knowledge of the other cross-disciplinary fields with in the programme
  • Be organised and efficient team player able to interact positively with all members of the team
  • Ideally have skills and experience in biospectroscopy, optics, cell culturing, microscopy, data analysis
  • Be able to work collaboratively, help to supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required
  • Have knowledge, skills and experience to be able to contribute significantly across at least one of the above activity areas

What we can offer you

  • The programme provides cross-disciplinary bespoke training and placements within and outwith the programme
  • The programme will establish a strong network of collaborators in associated areas enhancing research opportunities and career prospects for those working on the programme
  • Training in laboratory management skills
  • The programme team will work closely together and develop creative solutions in partnership with clinicians and industry
  • The department of Physics and Astronomy is committed to equality and diversity, being recently awarded IoP Juno Champion and Athena Swan Silver status in recognition of this
  • Our Exeter Academic initiative supporting high performing academics to achieve their potential and develop their career
