Metabolomics Core Manager

The Genome Center at the University of California, Davis invites applications from qualified candidates for the position as Manager of the Metabolomics Services Core.

This position will have general responsibility for maintaining and improving services at the Genome Center’s Metabolomics Service Core Facility and report to the Faculty Director, Professor Oliver Fiehn. The incumbent will supervise core staff members, provide guidance, and monitor all technical aspects of the Core. The Core Manager will advise users on study designs including sample preparation and options for handling and interpreting data, provide reports, train staff and researchers, write grant proposals to maintain the core with state-of-the-art equipment, represent
the Metabolomics Core at scientific conferences, oversee sample preparation and throughput, schedule sample analysis and maintain operation of the equipment. In consultation with the Faculty Director and other Core staff, the Core Manager will be responsible for the budgetary aspects of the Core, including monitoring account balances, advancing recharge structures and rates, and preparing budget reports in collaboration with the administrative staff of the Genome Center.

The Metabolomics Core Manager will increase efficiencies, as well as reduce costs, devise and implement new metabolomic methods, monitoring charts, bioinformatics resources and other measures to improve quality of metabolomic data and scientific reports. The incumbent will evaluate new technologies and equipment, and refine and implement new assays in consultation with the Faculty Director and the Advisory Board. The Metabolomics Core Manager will strive to use and deploy new computational tools to enhance metabolomics data processing, compound identifications, quantitative aspects of metabolomics, and interpretation of metabolomics data.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. or equivalent, a minimum of five years of experience in mass spectrometry and quantification of small molecules, and strong communications skills. Candidates with experience in metabolomics or with experience as directors of a service core are preferred.

The UC Davis Genome Center facilitates interdisciplinary research in the areas of genomics, metabolomics, proteomics and bioinformatics, and is involved in the training of undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Annual funding is approximately $21 million from multiple sources. The Metabolomics Core enables metabolomics projects and data submissions for more than 450 projects and up to 30,000 samples per year. The Core currently employs 13 FTE, has 17 mass spectrometers and hosts 18 databases and software resources.
