Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Neuroscience of Human Development

Virginia Tech (VT) is poised to make significant advances in understanding plasticity of the brain and its resultant manifestation as adaptive behavior by building trans-disciplinary teams and employing state-of-the-art technologies to address related themes and questions in the areas of decision-making, physical and psychological trauma, and development across the lifespan. Discoveries made in the Adaptive Brain and Behavior (ABB) Destination Area (https://www.provost.vt.edu/destination-areas/da-overview/da-brain.html) will have an impact on key health, economic, and social issues confronting our region, country, and the world, including performance, wellness, and treatment of brain/behavior disorders, resilience, and health policy. ABB research will be paired with an innovative curriculum introducing students to principles of the brain-behavior relationship and its impact on families, community, health, and the human condition. VT has already made and will continue to make substantial investment into these areas to transform the university into a national and international destination area for scientists, students, and inventors interested in ABB.

As part of this initiative, we are recruiting tenure track faculty members in multiple disciplines working in ABB areas, including one at the assistant professor level in the neuroscience of human development. Areas of particular interest for this recruitment include, but are not limited to brain, behavioral, and cognitive development; interactions of environment, family, and genetics on brain, behavioral, and cognitive development; and developmental disorders. Candidates using contemporary neuroscience research approaches including behavioral, neuroimaging, and computational and/or quantitative analytical methods are encouraged to apply. This faculty member will have an academic tenure earning position in the Department of Human Development and Family Science (HDFS – https://liberalarts.vt.edu/departments-and-schools/department-of-human-development-and-family-science.html) in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, with the faculty member located in the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute (FBRI – https://research.vtc.vt.edu/). The FBRI provides intellectually vibrant and technologically advanced environments that include 21 ABB research teams, state of the art human neuroimaging/neuromodulation facilities, and behavioral testing facilities.

The Center for Transformative Research on Health Behaviors, the FBRI, and the adjacent Virginia Tech Carilion (VTC) School Medicine are located in Roanoke in the picturesque Roanoke Valley midway between Washington, DC and Charlotte, NC. The Roanoke programs include 28 research groups with over 300 research and support team members producing a research grant portfolio of over $125M. Prospective faculty members can draw from an outstanding and diverse pool of graduate students to work with them in their research programs. About the Department of Human Development and Family Science (http://www.liberalarts.vt.edu/hdfs)

The Department of Human Development and Family Science, in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, has programs covering the human life span on two campuses. Currently, there are approximately 700 undergraduate and 50 graduate HDFS students on the Blacksburg campus and 35 master’s degree students located on the National Capital Region (NCR) campus in Falls Church, VA. The department includes 31 faculty, instructors, and research associates and is the home for four centers. The Blacksburg campus centers include the Child Development Center for Learning and Research, Adult Day Services, and the Family Therapy Center. The Family Services Center is located on the NCR campus. In the last 12 years, the Department of Human Development and Family Science has won the university’s Exemplary Department Award twice.

Applicants should have an earned doctorate, postdoctoral experience, and a demonstrated record of research excellence in some aspect of the neuroscience of human development, with strong potential for developing an innovative research program that already has or is likely to attract sustained extramural funding. They should be able to collaborate with other faculty members in the FBRI and the Department of HDFS. In addition to a primary mission of high quality research, it is expected that the faculty member will also contribute to the educational/training mission through participating in graduate teaching and mentoring as well as supervision of undergraduates and medical students in their research projects.
