Senior Scientist (Biologist)

Laboratory of Infectious Diseases

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is recruiting a senior scientist in the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases (LID) for the Division of Intramural Research (DIR).

We are seeking an outstanding individual to assume the leadership of a vigorous established research program focused on basic, translational, and clinical studies of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a major viral illness of early childhood. Applicants must have an M.D., Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant field with extensive postdoctoral experience, as well as a strong publication record demonstrating potential for creative RSV research. Clinical work is not required. The candidate must have expertise in basic research on the molecular biology, pathogenesis, and immunobiology of RSV and in designing new RSV vaccine candidates. The candidate would preferably have expertise in performing robust preclinical evaluation; preparing and analyzing new clinical seed lots; coordinating the manufacture of clinical trial material; preparing clinical trial protocols and related assays; preparing regulatory documents and Investigational New Drug (IND) applications; interpreting clinical data to guide a vaccine development program; and partnering with industry to develop vaccines. The incumbent will benefit from unique opportunities to interact with other members of LID and DIR who perform research on viral and other infectious diseases as well as on inflammatory or immune-mediated disorders.

The incumbent will have access to state-of-the-art core research support and the NIH Clinical Center, a premier research hospital on the main NIH campus. Candidates will be assigned independent resources to include laboratory support personnel, equipment, space, and an allocated annual budget for services, supplies, and salaries sufficient to foster success.

Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments. A full civil-service package of benefits (including retirement; health, life, and long-term care insurance; and Thrift Savings Plan) is available. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Additional information about LID is available on the LID website.
