UIC COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Pharmacy is in the process of merging its two basic science departments, subject to approval by the Illinois Board of Higher Education, to create the proposed Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. In anticipation of the merger, the College invites applications and nominations for the position of Head for this department. Located in the heart of Chicago, the College of Pharmacy is consistently ranked in the top ten nationally and is renowned for integration of its educational programs with innovative pharmacy services and cutting-edge research. With more than $347 million in annual research expenditures, UIC ranks among the leading universities in federal research funding.

The proposed merger involves two highly successful existing departments, the Department of Biopharmaceutical Sciences and the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy. If approved, the merged departments will combine the missions of the two departments and focus on advancing drug discovery and delivery and understanding of the mechanisms of drug action. The proposed merged departments will be home to 34 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 38 research/clinical/other faculty and nearly 100 graduate students. The current faculty in the department come from a variety of disciplines including pharmacology, pharmaceutics, pharmacognosy, chemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, toxicology, pharmacy, engineering and forensic science. The proposed merged departments will be home to a single umbrella graduate program that will offer students areas of concentration consistent with the research of the faculty.

The Department Head reports directly to the Dean of the College of Pharmacy. The position requires strong leadership; efficient oversight of department operations, recruitment/retention of department teaching and research faculty, ability to serve as an advocate for the department to the research community, and a sophisticated knowledge of the issues confronting higher education and basic science research in a public institution.

The successful candidate for Department Head will be a well-recognized leader in one of the areas of the current Departments strengths such as anti-infectives, anti-cancer, or neuroscience, or will bring new areas of research to the College, such as genomics, biotherapies, or others. Applicants must possess a PhD, PharmD or equivalent degree with postgraduate experience commensurate with the rank of tenured Professor. Applicants must have a strong record of scholarship and teaching, demonstrated effective leadership abilities, excellent interpersonal skills, and service to the profession. The successful candidate will have demonstrated commitment to recruiting and retaining an ethnically and culturally diverse faculty and staff.
