Associate Director, Precision Oncology Research

The Person: The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is seeking an innovative leader to serve as the Associate Director of Precision Oncology Research within the Center for Cancer Genomics (CCG) (www.cancer.gov/about-nci/organization/ccg). The CCG oversees NCI-wide genomics-based initiatives to accelerate the creation and use of tools that will bring a new understanding about the molecular underpinnings of different forms of cancer in children and adults.

We are seeking a senior-level candidate with a specialized combination of expertise in pediatric cancer, cancer genomics, and functional genomics. The position will report directly to the CCG Director and serve as the primary advisor to NCI senior officials on the development of NCI’s Moonshot activities in the area of cancer genomics. The position manages and oversees the programs and functional responsibilities of the Office of Cancer Genomics (OCG) within the CCG, therefore, interested candidates should also have extensive administrative management experience.

Position Requirements:  Applicants must possess a doctoral level degree (e.g. Ph.D. or M.D.) in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this experience and equivalent experience. The candidate must have extensive expertise and recognized leadership in biomedical and cancer genomics research to provide leadership, subject matter expertise, and coordination for NCI’s Moonshot activities related to adult and pediatric cancer genomics and the utilization of shared resources to ensure achievement of Cancer Moonshot Initiative and Blue-Ribbon Panel goals. In doing so, the candidate must have experience in designing and initiating cancer genomics programs, building infrastructure and teams, and executing new scientific research initiatives. The candidate must have experience in developing and improving genomic data systems and technologies into which sequencing data and high-content functional screening data will be deposited to facilitate breakthrough findings for improved treatments as well as new insights into fundamental cancer biology.  The candidate must have experience in developing and improving genomic data systems and technologies into which sequencing data and high-content functional screening data will be deposited to facilitate breakthrough findings for improved treatments. The candidate must have knowledge of Federal contracting laws and regulation to manage a portfolio of contracts and grants supporting cancer genomics and translational research totaling nearly $30 million that support NCI’s priorities in cancer genomics. 

Salary/Benefits: Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with the experience of the candidate. A recruitment or relocation bonus may be available, and relocation expenses may be paid. A full package of federal Civil Service benefits is available, including: retirement, health and life insurance, long term care insurance, leave, and a Thrift Savings Plan (401K equivalent).
