An NIH-funded post-doctoral position is open in the laboratory of Professor Thomas Bobik at Iowa State University, Ames, IA to conduct research on bacterial microcompartments. Bacterial microcompartments are huge multi-protein complexes that serve as metabolic organelles in hundreds of species of diverse bacteria. Microcompartments are associated with bacterial pathogenesis as well as heart disease and cancer because of their role in the human gut microbiome. In addition, microcompartments have potential application to the production of renewable chemicals and to drug delivery. Although bioinformatic analyses have identified many classes of microcompartments, only a few types have been characterized in any detail. The open position involves the use of interdisciplinary approaches to elucidate the functions and mechanisms of diverse types of bacterial microcompartment organelles. The PIs department is in the process of installing a new state-of-the-art cryo electron microscope that will be available for the project. ISU also has excellent core facilities for NMR, X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, NGS, RNAseq, genomics, etc. Applicants must have Ph.D microbiology, biochemistry, biophysics or a related field. Experience in bacterial genetics as well as biochemical and biophysical analysis of proteins is preferred.
