Postdoctoral Fellow in Molecular Neuroscience

Cures Start Here. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home to three Nobel laureates, is an independent, nonprofit research institute based in Seattle. Its interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists seek new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Laboratories in the Basic Sciences Division investigate diverse areas of molecular, computational, cellular, developmental, evolutionary and structural biology, metabolism, virology, and neuroscience. We utilize a broad range of experimental and computational approaches and model systems. Fred Hutch provides outstanding colleagues, a collegial atmosphere, and a wealth of resources, including core resources for imaging, proteomics, genomics, flow cytometry, high content screening, and small animal research. Frequent meetings and external seminars provide many opportunities for inter-lab collaborations.

A highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow is sought to carry out research in the laboratory of Dr. Linda Buck at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA. https://research.fhcrc.org/buck/en.html

The Buck lab studies the molecular mechanisms and neural circuits that underlie the sense of smell and instinctive odor responses. It is interested in how the olfactory system detects myriad environmental chemicals and how the brain translates those chemicals into diverse odor perceptions, hormonal alterations, and instinctive behaviors.  It is also interested in neural mechanisms that underlie stress.  Illumination of the neural circuits underpinning these and related effects may provide clues to those affected in certain human disorders, particularly those involving stress, fear, and appetite.  The lab is particularly interested in using cutting edge technologies, such as single cell genomics, for dissecting the composition of complex neural networks.

 

Responsibilities

The fellow will be responsible for developing and executing a project related to current and future interests of the lab, as determined by discussions with Dr. Buck.  The successful candidate will be an individual who is enthusiastic about science and is capable of independent research. 

 

Qualifications

Required

  • PhD in molecular and cell biology or molecular neuroscience
  • Excellent knowledge of fundamental molecular and cell biology
  • Experience using molecular techniques for cloning and for analysis of nucleic acids and proteins
  • Experience using immunohistochemistry and/or in situ hybridization for analyses of gene expression

Preferred

  • Experience with RNA sequencing and bioinformatics
  • Experience in mouse breeding and genotyping
  • Knowledge of neuroscience
