Post-doctoral Fellow/Research Scientist
Two post-doctoral/research scientist positions are immediately available in the Center of Vaccine and Immunity at the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (Columbus, OH) to study the hepatitis virus life cycle and pathogenesis. Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E viruses (HEV) are both enterically transmitted hepatotropic viruses and thought to be non-enveloped for decades. However, recent studies have revealed that the virus circulating in the patient's blood is completely cloaked in host membranes and resistant to neutralizing antibodies (Feng et al., Nature, 2013). The discovery of this novel enveloped form has raised a series of questions about the fundamental biology of HAV and HEV and the way these viruses interact with their host (Feng & Lemon, Trends Microbiol, 2014; Feng et al., Ann Rev Virol, 2014). In addition, we recently discovered a capsid-mimicking decoy protein in HEV that potentially alters the humoral and cellular responses during acute and chronic infections (Yin et al., PNAS, 2018). Projects are directed to understand (1) how quasi-enveloped virions are produced at the apical and basolateral sides of polarized hepatocytes, enter the cell, and whether/how they become neutralized by antibodies, and (2) what role(s) the decoy protein plays during HEV infections. Opportunities also exist to work on the entry and exit mechanisms for the hepatitis B and D viruses.
The successful candidate is expected to have excellent technical and communication skills, perform self-directed research, and assist the PI in preparing manuscripts and grant applications.
Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent with strong research experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, or cell biology. Applicants with experience in virology or immunology are particularly encouraged to apply. Competitive salary will be commensurate with experience (NIH recommended salary for postdocs). Interested applicants should submit a single PDF file consisting of a CV, a brief description of their research achievements and interests, and a list of 3 references to Dr. Zongdi Feng (Zongdi.Feng@nationwidechildrens.org).
