Assistant Professor

Virginia Commonwealth University's Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology invites applications for a collateral Assistant Professor position, to conduct and manage research activities within a large research group led by a senior investigator.  Chosen candidate will design and implement experiments involving specialized research procedures, conceptualize new projects, generate preliminary work, and apply for independent external funding.

The candidate must have a PhD in neuroscience, with emphasis in neuropharmacology or neurophysiology, with at least three years of relevant postdoctoral training, as well as documented experience in writing and publishing scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals (at least 10 publications).  The successful candidate will have 1) competence in whole-cell patch clamp and extracellular field potential recordings from acute brain slices, ideally with a background in hippocampal or striatal neuropharmacology and/or 2) competence in the culture and whole-cell physiology of neurons and glia or in immortalized pluripotent neural stem cells; and 3) a background in neuroimmunology.  Interest in opioid drug abuse and neuroHIV is ideal but not required.  Also required is evidence of the ability to think creatively and to design fundable research projects.  Current or prior independent funding is desirable but not required.  The successful applicant will be expected to develop a productive research program leading toward independent funding, and have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Application Process:  Please apply via the VCU eJobs system, at https://www.vcujobs.com.  Search in keywords for F06480, then submit a CV, cover letter (describing research interests), and (via the Other Documents section) names and contact information for three professional references.  Virginia Commonwealth University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action university providing access to education and employment without regard to age, race, color, national origin, gender, religion, sexual orientation, veteran’s status, political affiliation or disability.
