Cancer Genetics and Epigenetics Research Program Leader

Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University

The Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University (Winship) in partnership with Emory School of Medicine invites applications from outstanding candidates for a tenure-eligible faculty position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, commensurate with experience to lead the Winship Cancer Genetics and Epigenetics Research Program. We seek exceptional individuals with dynamic and innovative cancer research programs and an established leadership record.  Candidate should have a specific research focus in cancer genetics, epigenetics, genomics, DNA damage and repair, or bioinformatics. Successful candidates will be expected to maintain an independent cancer-focused federally funded research program and to participate in cancer center activities as a research program leader.  This recruiting effort is part of a strategic initiative to recruit an outstanding research program leader to advance the mission and vision of Winship while supporting Winship’s NCI Cancer Center Support Grant. Successful candidates will represent the research program at the institutional level and drive multi-disciplinary collaborative research to advance the four specific themes of the research program:

  1. To understand the mechanisms by which cells recognize, repair, and respond to the DNA damage and how failure of these systems drive genetics or chromosomal instability
  2. To understand the basic mechanisms by which epigenetics influences the regulation of gene expression and the maintenance of cellular identity, and how defects in these mechanisms contribute to oncogenesis
  3. To determine how the genetic/epigenetic disruption of key driver genes contributes to the initiation and progression of human cancers
  4. To exploit the inter-individual variation in genomic/epigenomic signatures to facilitate the molecular classification of tumors, with the goal of developing better diagnostic and predictive tools.

As Georgia’s first and only National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Winship serves as the coordinating center for a vast array of resources in medical, surgical, radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging, basic and translational research and the subspecialties of cancer care and prevention throughout Emory University. Winship has 460 clinical and research members with academic appointments in over 39 departments across the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health at Emory University. In total, Winship members hold over $85 million in direct research funding. Winship is home to four research programs: Cancer Cell Biology, Cancer Genetics and Epigenetics, Cancer Prevention and Control, and Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics. Emory School of Medicine is renowned as a premier research institution, and now ranks 17th among all US medical schools in total NIH research support. The Emory University’s many research facilities, graduate and professional schools, main hospital, and undergraduate college campus occupy a 600-acre park-like setting in northeast Atlanta. The close proximity to downtown Atlanta and partner institutions such as the Georgia Institute of Technology, the National Centers for Disease Control, and the American Cancer Society provides unique opportunities for multidisciplinary interactions and a vibrant academic and urban/suburban environment.

Successful candidates will hold a PhD, MD or MD/PhD degree, postdoctoral training and a strong track record of peer-reviewed research publications and extramural funding.  It is expected that for candidates will maintain funding from the National Cancer Institute.  Interested candidates should submit a cover letter describing their background and experience, curriculum vitae, and a short statement of research direction to:
