Chief of Structural Biology

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is seeking an outstanding, internationally recognized, and visionary scientist to assume the position of Chief of Structural Biology in the NCI Center for Cancer Research (CCR).  This position, which is the equivalent of an academic Department Chair, is a key component of a major initiative to expand the structural biology program on NCI’s Frederick, Maryland campus.

The Chief of Structural Biology will lead and oversee all structural biology efforts in the NCI Intramural Program currently housed in the NCI Macromolecular Crystallography Laboratory (MCL) and the Structural Biophysics Laboratory (SBL). The Chief will coordinate the integration of these existing research activities and will have the opportunity, by recruitment of additional faculty, to create a new internationally leading NCI structural biology program that addresses critical problems in cancer and other human diseases using state-of-the-art methods and emerging technologies. The Chief will also be appointed as a tenured NCI Intramural Senior Investigator.  Generous, stable financial resources and newly renovated space on the NCI Frederick campus, will be available to support the Chief’s individual research program. Candidates whose work focuses on emerging new technologies in structural biology including, but not limited to, cellular tomography, visualization of dynamic states, single molecule analysis, and the development of groundbreaking new methods are particularly encouraged to apply.

The NCI Frederick campus is home to the NCI structural biology program and a wide range of technological assets, including nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray crystallography (in-house X-ray diffraction facilities and national synchrotron and free electron laser facilities), small angle X-ray scattering (in-house and synchrotron-based), cryo-electron microscopy, computational biology, and a well-equipped biophysics core facility. In addition, high-quality cores dedicated to protein chemistry, mass spectrometry, imaging, microscopy, proteomics, genomics, bioinformatics/biostatistics, and flow cytometry, as well as clinical support at the NIH Clinical Center are available, providing a truly unique research environment.

NCI is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), a federal government agency.  The CCR is the largest component of the intramural biomedical research effort at NIH and is a major user of the NIH Clinical Research Center, a state-of-the-art research hospital on the Bethesda, Maryland campus. The CCR offers a tremendous depth and breadth of intellectual and technological resources, as well as opportunities for collaboration with investigators both within and outside of the NIH.  The research environment is highly conducive to advancing translational research and highly collaborative, emphasizing multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary team science.

Tenured faculty or industrial scientists of equivalent rank with a demonstrated commitment to structural biology, biophysics, and/or technology development are encouraged to apply.  Applicants should hold a Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant discipline, and should possess outstanding communication and leadership skills.  Salary will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments.  This position is not restricted to U.S. citizens.  A full civil service package of benefits (including health insurance, life insurance, and retirement) is available.

This position is subject to a background investigation. The NIH is dedicated to building a diverse community in its training and employment programs.

Interested applicants should submit:

▪ A letter of interest in this position, including a career synopsis (1-3 pages)

▪ A statement of research interests and leadership philosophy (1-3 pages)

▪ Names and contact information for three letters of recommendation

▪ A current curriculum vitae (CV) and complete bibliography.  The CV should include a description of mentoring and outreach activities, especially those involving women and persons from racial, ethnic, and other groups that  are underrepresented in biomedical research.

Applications must be submitted electronically to https://irp-positions.nih.gov/job/SBLChief2.  This search will remain open until the position is filled.  Review of applications will begin on or about March 18, 2019. For questions regarding the application process please contact Lori Holliday, Faculty Recruitment Coordinator at hollidal@mail.nih.gov.
