Staff Scientist—Cancer Immunology & Immunotherapy

Vaccine Branch -- Berzofsky Lab

The Vaccine Branch, Center for Cancer Research (CCR), National Cancer Institute (NCI, National Institute of Health (NIH) is a national leader in biology and immunology. We are seeking an outstanding staff-scientist to carry out original and innovative laboratory studies in a stimulating research environment and mentor a team of postdoctoral fellows and students. The position is a non-tenure track position and is equivalent to a Research Assistant Professor in a university setting. This position is located on the campus of the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland.

The CCR is the largest intramural research component of the NCI.  The CCR provides extensive opportunities for collaboration, and allows scientists and clinicians to undertake high-risk, high-impact laboratory- and clinic-based investigations.  CCR’s enabling infrastructure also facilitates clinical studies at the NIH Clinical Center, the world’s largest dedicated clinical research complex.  Investigators are supported by a wide array of intellectual, technological and research resources, including animal facilities and dedicated, high-quality technology cores in areas such as imaging/microscopy, chemistry/purification, mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, genomics/DNA sequencing, transgenics and knockout mice, arrays/molecular profiling, and human genetics/bioinformatics. For an overview of CCR, visit http://ccr.cancer.gov/.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree as well as postdoctoral research experience (minimum of three years). The successful candidate will have demonstrable expertise and a record of achievement in the area of cancer immunology and immunotherapy and cancer vaccines in murine studies, and preferably expertise and experience in NKT cells and the role of these and other regulatory cells in cancer. Experience with human clinical immunology that complements a laboratory research program is desirable, and a commitment to training and mentoring is required, as well as some experience in training and mentoring.  The successful candidate will be required to supervise, train and mentor a team of postdoctoral and post-baccalaureate fellows as well as carry out his/her own research studies, under the overall mentorship of the laboratory PI/branch chief. The candidate must have an outstanding publication record (with multiple first authored papers in highly respected peer-reviewed journals). Additional relevant research experience beyond postdoctoral experience is preferred.

Application

Interested individuals should submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, brief statement of research interests and future plans (1-2 pages), and two letters of recommendation electronically to Ms. Lisa Smith (smithli2@mail.nih.gov).  Applications will be reviewed beginning on February 1, 2019 and will be accepted until the search process has been completed.

DHHS, NIH and NCI are Equal Opportunity Employers.  The NIH is dedicated to building a diverse community in its training and employment programs.

This position is subject to a background investigation.
