The Person: NCI is seeking an innovative leader to serve as the Director, Center for Strategic Scientific Initiatives (CSSI).  CSSI serves as a strategic focus for the identification of emerging opportunities in cancer research and development of trans-NCI initiatives in coordination with the Divisions, Centers and Offices.  In consultation with the extramural cancer research and other scientific communities, CSSI examines the continuum of research to identify major barriers to progress and organizes and conducts workshops and think tanks to devise strategies that address those barriers through carefully planned initiatives. CSSI’s mission is to identify, coordinate trans-NCI exploratory programs focused on the development and integration of trans-disciplinary research, and advanced technologies, knowledge, and tools and to ensure that they are broadly accessible to empower the entire cancer research continuum for patient benefits. 

The incumbent serves as the Director, CSSI and reports directly to the NCI Deputy Director.  The Director, CSSI, is responsible for identifying and providing coordination of NCI-wide emerging scientific opportunities in basic, translational and clinical cancer research; coordinating development of identified strategic scientific initiatives in basic, translational and clinical cancer research; coordinating discussion and development of emerging enabling technologies and ensuring the technologies, data and knowledge are broadly available to the cancer research community; collaborating with the Center for Research Strategy (CRS) to focus attention on areas identified by CRS portfolio analysis; and  coordinating trans-NCI initiatives (e.g. Innovative Molecular Analysis Technologies (IMAT),  Provocative Questions (PQ)).

The Director CSSI, manages an operational budget of approximately $32 million and a staff of 24 employees to meet CSSI’s strategic science and advanced technology-based development initiatives and goals.  The Director, CSSI is a key NCI management and leadership position that provides authoritative scientific and technological leadership, advice and managerial oversight of the CSSI strategic science and advanced technology-based development initiatives. 

Position Requirements: 

Applicants must possess a doctoral level degree (e.g. Ph.D. or M.D.) in an academic filed related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this experience and equivalent experience. Applicants must have extensive expertise and recognized leadership in biomedical and cancer research and documented excellent administrative scientific management skills and experience. In addition, applicants must be able to provide expert leadership and guidance on new strategic science and advanced cancer technology-based development initiatives. Applicants must have experience overseeing a multi-million-dollar budget, scientific and administrative staff, and scientific contractors; providing expert advice on matters related to cross-cutting scientific operations. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. This position will be filled under a Title 42(f) excepted service appointment.

Salary/Benefits: Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with the experience of the candidate. A recruitment or relocation bonus may be available, and relocation expenses may be paid. A full package of federal Civil Service benefits is available, including: retirement, health and life insurance, long term care insurance, leave, and a Thrift Savings Plan (401K equivalent).
