BIOLOGY INSTRUCTOR - TENURE TRACK
The Department of Zoology seeks candidates to fill a tenure-track Instructor position to teach in the Biology Undergraduate Program in the general areas of introductory biology, genetics, and cell, molecular, evolutionary and developmental biology.
Teaching experience in genetics and cell biology or related fields and a PhD in a relevant area of biology, or an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience are necessary. Experience with evidence-based teaching, discipline-based educational research and/or scholarship of teaching and learning are required. Successful candidates will demonstrate evidence of outstanding teaching, expertise and excellent pedagogical content knowledge in the subject area, and the ability to contribute to ongoing curriculum and course development.
The UBC Biology Program places a premium on excellent teaching with 15 tenured faculty in the Educational Leadership stream. Many of our courses employ "flipped classroom" models and other active-learning strategies, emphasizing evidence-based effective practices. Candidates must be committed to improving biology teaching and demonstrate success at teaching large enrolment introductory courses. The ability and willingness of the candidate to teach a range of subject matter and at various levels of instruction will be considered.
Duties of the position vary, and may include the development and coordination of tutorials, contributing to lab and lecture teaching at introductory levels, developing introductory laboratory courses, and collaborating with the Beaty Biodiversity Museum to increase its engagement in undergraduate teaching.
As a member of the UBC Educational Leadership stream, the candidate is expected to demonstrate promise of educational leadership (https://science.ubc.ca/sites/science.ubc.ca/files/FacultyofScience_EL_DP.pdf). Experience implementing large-scale curriculum change would be an asset. The candidate will participate in course and curriculum development, and in training and supervision of teaching assistants. The candidate is expected to actively participate in departmental activities, service, events, and initiatives.
