Job Description

The Duke Department of Surgery seeks a highly-motivated postdoctoral associate to perform independent basic research within the Urinary Dysfunction Laboratory in the Department of Surgery/Division of Urology. The laboratory PI is Dr. Todd Purves, an MD/PhD board-certified physician in pediatric urology. The lab manager is Dr. Monty Hughes, a Ph.D with 25+ years’ experience running a basic research lab. The goal of the lab is to better understand the role of inflammation in bringing about pathological conditions associated with benign urological disease. We have primarily been focused on the NLRP3 inflammasome in this process. We are particularly interested in how bladder-associated damage is sensed and how the resulting inflammatory response is translated into the urinary dysfunction and cellular/molecular changes that characterize disease. Currently we are actively investigating NLRP3 in bladder outlet obstruction models (which reflect the obstruction created by benign prostatic hyperplasia in older men) and diabetes. For these studies the laboratory takes a comprehensive approach ranging from physiological measurements to numerous cellular and molecular assays. Requirements: We are seeking highly motivated, recent Ph.D. Degree in a physiology/cell biology/biochemistry field. Experience in the lower urinary tract would be considered a positive. Requirements:

• Extensive experience in rodent handling and experimentation

• Expertise in laboratory techniques related to molecular biology, biochemistry, cell signaling and physiology research is essential.

•Ability to analyze, interpret and present experimental results.

• Previous publications in top-tier peer-reviewed publications is expected and grant writing experience is a positive

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English with good organizational and analytical abilities

• Capable of working independently and trouble-shooting experiments is required and will be fostered in this position. Development of independent ideas and projects is also highly encouraged, particularly in the later stages of this appointment. However, the candidate must also work well in a team-based environment and be able to actively participate in multi-disciplinary collaborations.
