Penn State University Consortium to Combat Substance Abuse Strategic Hires: The Departments of Biobehavioral Health, Human Development and Family Studies, Neural and Behavioral Sciences, Psychology, and Sociology and Criminology, in conjunction with the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI; http://www.ssri.psu.edu/) at The Pennsylvania State University, announce five tenure track positions in substance abuse as part of the University's recently launched Consortium to Combat Substance Abuse (CCSA; https://CombatSubstanceAbuse.ssri.psu.edu). We seek colleagues whose research interests and expertise fit within the broad areas of: pathways to addiction, criminal justice and/or spillover effects of substance abuse to families and communities (position descriptions below).

Penn State is committed to building our research, education and outreach capacity to address the complex problem of substance abuse and will hire up to twelve new faculty members over the next four years. These strategic hires will build on our faculty's long tradition of excellence in interdisciplinary and translational research on substance abuse and addiction, including in the University's academic departments as well as centers of research excellence such as the Penn State Addiction Center for Translation (PS ACT); Administrative Data Accelerator, http://www.accelerator.psu.edu; Child Study Center, csc.psych.psu.edu; Criminal Justice Research Center, http://justicecenter.psu.edu/; Edna Bennett Pierce Prevention Research Center, http://www.prevention.psu.edu; Methodology Center https://methodology.psu.edu/; Population Research Institute, www.pop.psu.edu; Center for Educational Disparities Research http://www.ssri.psu.edu/center-educational-disparities-research; Child Maltreatment Solutions Network http://solutionsnetwork.psu.edu; and Social, Life and Engineering Sciences Imaging Center, https://www.imaging.psu.edu.

CCSA faculty will also have access to research infrastructure in Penn State's cross-university research Institutes, including the SSRI, Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute, http://ctsi.psu.edu/; Huck Institutes of Life Sciences https://www.huck.psu.edu/; Institute for CyberScience, https://ics.psu.edu; Penn State Cancer Institute https://cancer.psu.edu/; and Penn State Neuroscience Institute https://hmc.pennstatehealth.org/neuroscience-institute. Our expectation is that these new colleagues will work actively to build a powerful inter-disciplinary community of scholars focused on illuminating the multi-level processes that give rise to addiction, designing, implementing, evaluating, and disseminating novel, evidence-based approaches for prevention and treatment of addiction and identifying and ameliorating the effects of substance abuse on families and communities.

Description: The Department of Biobehavioral Health (BBH; https://hhd.psu.edu/bbh) in the College of Health and Human Development announces an open-rank tenure-line faculty position that integrates behavioral and biological approaches to examine substance abuse in vulnerable populations. Given youth vulnerability to the onset of substance use and abuse, interdisciplinary and developmentally informed research programs that examine how environmental factors (e.g., early life trauma, developmental stress, impoverished social and physical environments, etc.) interact with biological factors (e.g., brain development, genetics, etc.) to increase adolescent/young adult susceptibility to substance abuse disorders and addiction are of particular interest. Candidates should demonstrate an established interdisciplinary research program and a successful history of external funding that integrates behavioral and biological approaches to examine substance abuse. We welcome candidates with research programs that integrate multiple levels of analysis, including at the biological, social, and/or societal context levels. Description: The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS; http://www.hhdev.psu.edu/HDFS) in the College of Health and Human Development invites applications for a tenure-line faculty member at the rank of Associate or Full Professor whose research examines: developmental pathways to substance use, abuse, and addiction and/or the effects of substance abuse on the health and well-being of children, youth, adults, and families. Inherent in this position will be a focus on the translation of knowledge obtained into intervention aimed at preventing substance abuse over the life course and more immediate time scales. Specific focus areas for this position include, but are not limited to, parental drug addiction; substance abuse prevention and intervention; risk and protective factors; environmental climate in the home; marital and co-parenting relations; parent-child dynamics; parental monitoring; family, peer, neighborhood, policy and media influences; policy impact analysis, and how contextual factors impact and interact with genetic, physiological and neurodevelopmental factors. The successful applicant will be a leader in a program of research with demonstrated impact on policy and/or practice, a strong publication record, and a track record of securing external funding. Responsibilities include directing a research program focusing on substance abuse, teaching both undergraduate and graduate level courses, and directing theses/dissertations. An earned doctorate in the behavioral or social sciences and the promise of continued outstanding scholarly accomplishments are required.
