The Department of Chemistry at Sacramento State offers an American Chemical Society approved BS Chemistry degree, a BS Biochemistry degree, BA degrees with concentrations in biochemistry and forensics, and master’s degrees in chemistry, including a biochemistry concentration. The department is undergoing rapid growth and currently has over 600 majors. Our degree programs include a strong focus on hands-on experiences, and we place a high value on faculty mentored research for students. We place a high value on faculty mentored research for undergraduates and graduate students. Students in our department come from diverse academic, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds; faculty in the department are committed to equity and diversity programs that ensure student success in the STEM disciplines. Our graduates obtain industry and government jobs in chemistry, biochemistry, and biotechnology; complete PhD programs in all areas of chemistry; complete professional health degrees in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and optometry; and teach in community colleges and high schools in the Sacramento region. Student learning in the college is enhanced through the Center for Science and Math Success programs.

Duties and responsibilities of the position include:

  1. Teaching and developing curriculum in undergraduate general chemistry courses for both chemistry and non-chemistry majors.
  2. Teaching and developing curriculum in master’s level courses in chemistry education or related areas.
  3. Advising students.
  4. Developing a program of scholarship in chemistry education involving undergraduate and master’s students.
  5. Writing external grant proposals.
  6. Developing and maintaining programs in chemistry education.
  7. Participating in department and institution committee work.
  8. Participating in professional community service.

Required Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. in chemistry, chemistry education or closely related field. ABD considered. If ABD, degree requirements must be completed by time of appointment.
  2. Experience teaching college level chemistry.
  3. A strong background in chemistry and chemistry education.
  4. Ability to work with a highly diverse student population from a wide range of ethnic, economic, and college preparation backgrounds.
  5. Ability to develop innovative teaching strategies – including the use of technology – to address students’ different learning styles, learning environments, and backgrounds.
  6. A strong interest in teaching in a diverse, public higher-education environment.
  7. Ability to teach general chemistry classes for majors or non-majors.
  8. Ability to develop independent research projects with a chemistry education focus involving undergraduate and graduate students.
  9. Ability to compete for external grants.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Independent teaching experience in college level general chemistry courses.
  2. Ability to teach upper division/master’s level lecture courses in chemical education.
  3. Post-doctoral research experience in chemistry education.
  4. Experience developing curriculum materials in chemistry.
  5. Ability to work with other faculty in developing and implementing innovative teaching strategies.
  6. Evidence of contributions to advancements in the chemistry education field.
  7. Grant writing experience.
