Postdoctoral fellow positions in molecular biology or bioinformatics

Two postdoc positions (one in molecular biology and the other in bioinformatics) are immediately available in the laboratory of Dr. Jian Feng (https://www.bio.fsu.edu/faculty.php?faculty-id=feng) in the Department of Biological Science and Doctoral Program in Neuroscience at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. The laboratory is interested in exploring novel epigenetic mechanisms of neuropsychiatric disorders, especially drug addiction. The laboratory integrates mouse behaviors, epigenetics/genomics, and bioinformatics to address biologically meaningful questions. The postdoc candidates will be expected to work on the following NIH-funded projects:

1) Three dimensional chromosome architecture in drug addiction. We will elucidate the three-dimensional genome organization through Hi-C in preclinical models of cocaine and heroin addiction. We will study long-range looping interactions between distal DNA elements and gene promoters within specific neuronal subtypes differentially engaged in addiction. This project is funded by a NIDA Avenir Award (Director’s Pioneer Award).

2) Neuron subtype-specific role of DNA methylcytosine dioxygenase TET1 in cocaine addiction. We will study the functional role of TET1 and its mediated DNA methylation turnover in the two major neuronal subtypes of ventral striatum, the center of the brain reward pathway. This project is supported by an R01 fund.

The two positions are for wet lab (molecular biology, genomics) and dry lab (bioinformatics), respectively, but can be flexible, depending on the applicant’s expertise. Cutting-edge techniques (e.g., Hi-C; viral manipulations; in vivo genome editing; high-throughput sequencing; single cell genomics; cell type-specific techniques) will be included in our approach. Motivated individuals with a PhD in molecular biology, molecular genetics, bioinformatics, computational biology, neuroscience or a related field are encouraged to apply. Experience in genome editing and next-generation sequencing is desirable. Expertise in neuroscience or epigenetics is not required. Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively are essential. The candidates are also welcome to participate in several other ongoing projects in neuroepigenomics within the lab and to explore novel directions of research.

Florida State University is a rising public university (#70 in US News National Universities ranking) with strengths in neuroscience (http://neuro.fsu.edu/) and genomics (https://genomics.fsu.edu/research). Tallahassee is the capital of Florida. The sunny weather, mild winters, easy beach access, affordable living, and great school zones make Tallahassee and ideal location for career and family development.

Interested applicants should send a cover letter, a current CV, expected starting date, as well as contact information for three references to Dr. Jian Feng at feng@bio.fsu.edu.  Review of applications will begin immediately until the position is filled.
