Fralin Biomedical Research Institute

Virginia Tech

The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute seeks a lead Senior System Engineer to work in a new area of human brain imaging that employs new sensing methodologies (optically pumped magnetometry) and requires the integration of sensing methodologies with computational modeling and other imaging modalities. The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent in physics or engineering or the equivalent, and possess hands-on experience with the design, fabrication, and deployment of atomic magnetometers, photometric methods (CCDs, EMCCDs, and their congeners) and statistical approaches to detecting extremely small signals in noisy environments. The candidate should also possess good communication skills and a demonstrated capacity to work and direct diverse groups of investigators. Prior experience working on neurobiological data is a plus, but is not required. Experience with MATLAB or equivalent analysis software is preferred. A demonstrated capacity to engineer working solutions to signal detection problems is necessary and candidates with appropriate experience along these lines should be able to provide evidence of prior work.

The research institute and the adjacent medical school are located in Roanoke in the picturesque Roanoke Valley midway between Washington, DC and Charlotte, NC with 28 research groups with over 300 research and support team members with a research grant portfolio of over $125M. Prospective faculty members can draw from an outstanding and diverse pool of graduate students to work with them in their research program. Virginia Tech has over 6,000 graduate students and offers several graduate programs in biomedically-related disciplines, including the Translational Biology, Medicine, and Heath Ph.D. program that has neuroscience and as one of its tracks (
