Job Role Summary

ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company has an immediate opening at its Corporate Strategic Research laboratory in Clinton, New Jersey for a Member of Technical Staff in the area of experimental mechanics of nonlinear and heterogeneous materials.  The successful candidate will have in-depth knowledge in the physics and micro-mechanisms governing deformation, failure and durability of various engineering materials, with preference given to specialization in polymer-matrix composite materials such as fiber-reinforced composites and nanocomposites. Demonstrated record in conducting mechanistic, experimentally-validated investigations of mechanical structure/property relationships is required. 

ExxonMobil’s Corporate Strategic Research laboratory is a facility of over 200 scientists and engineers conducting fundamental research related to ExxonMobil’s Upstream, Downstream, and Chemical businesses. CSR features an international staff covering a broad range of scientific disciplines, close ties with academic institutions and national laboratories, and state-of-the-art analytical and support facilities,. Its location in scenic western New Jersey provides high-quality public schools and convenient access to New York City, Princeton, and Philadelphia.


Job Role Responsibilities

The researcher will apply skills in the physics/micro-mechanisms of materials and tools such as theoretical and applied solid mechanics and cutting-edge experimentation to elucidate the fundamental origins of the mechanical performance of advanced materials, including hydrocarbon-based composites. Their research will be applied towards developing next-generation structural composites with targeted properties. The successful candidate will be expected to make substantial individual and collaborative contributions within multi-disciplinary, cross-functional teams, and to patent, publish their results in high-impact international journals. 


Expected Level of Proficiency

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, Civil Engineering, Physics, or a related field; 
  • A track record of high-impact, first-author publications;
  • Post-doctoral / Industrial research experience is preferred;
  • The successful candidate will be expected to augment ExxonMobil’s knowledge-base in experimental material mechanics and polymer-based composites.
