Staff Scientist

Columbia’s Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute (Zuckerman Institute) brings together an extraordinary group of world-class scientists into the Jerome L. Greene Science Center, a state-of-the-art facility, to transform our understanding of the brain and mind.

The Costa lab within the Zuckerman Institute is seeking a Staff Associate to manage the day-to-day care of the mouse colony for a dynamic behavioral laboratory. The Staff Associate promotes efficient use and flow of mice and other scientific resources in a complex research environment.

The Staff Associate facilitates experimental design, assists lab members with their research projects, and provides overall support to the lab.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for the following:

*Interfaces with lab members to support research activities. Much of the research relies on animal models to help investigators understand the neural circuits underpinning behavior. To aid in execution of designed experiments, the Staff Associate oversees all operations of this research colony and is responsible for maintaining multiple lines of transgenic mice. The Staff Associate also discusses available lines and adjusts breedings for each project as needed; collection of samples for genotyping via Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), weaning, aging and sexing of pups. Additionally, the Staff Associate supervises other procedures to ensure the welfare of the animals.
