AgResearch is the Crown Research Institute tasked with delivering leading agricultural science and innovation to benefit the wider New Zealand economy. Our internationally-recognised scientists work across the agricultural sectors in collaboration with a range of stakeholders both nationally and internationally, putting science and innovation at the forefront. We are a unique organisation that is driving prosperity by transforming agriculture.

The Role and Opportunity

AgResearch Farms Systems and Environment group is looking for a reputable Senior Scientist to join the Modelling Team at the Christchurch campus in the New Year.

The Modelling Team comprises a range of skills including ecological, biological, mathematical and agricultural systems modelling and undertakes research ranging from client-focussed delivery with immediate impact, to more blue-skies consideration of modelling methodologies.

AgResearch is a leader in the development of APSIM for the application to grazed pasture systems and in particular the spatial effects of animal dung and urine returns on nutrient cycling and environmental losses. You will be expected to work collaboratively with colleagues in CSIRO (Australia) and the APSIM Initiative in designing and conducting research.

The Senior Scientist will contribute to the goals of the Farm Systems and Environment Group and will play a key role in shaping the direction of critical models used and developed at AgResearch.

These models will be used to guide experiment design and interpretation and you will be delivering high quality science modelling outcomes relevant to pastoral industry priorities.

To be suitable for this particular position:

  • You will have substantial expertise in the application and development of process-based modelling in agricultural, preferably pastoral systems and will have published widely based on your expertise.
  • Your published research will demonstrate your approach to science rigour in modelling as a pre-requisite to robust results.
  • You are likely to have a primary core expertise in soil, plant or animal science plus some experience in coding (preferably C#) models, but a demonstrable record of working with experimentalists and software professionals in these disciplines would be sufficient.
  • You will have a strong track record in working flexibly with others in the development and application of process-based models.
