Computational Genomics Lab, Division of Depression and Anxiety Disorders, McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School
The Computational Genomics Lab, directed by Dr. Guffanti an Associate Neuroscientist at McLean Hospital, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Associate Member at the Broad Institute at McLean Hospital is looking for a highly motivated, recent Ph.D. graduate candidate for a post-doc position to begin as early as January 2019. The ideal candidate will have expertise in bioinformatics to work full-time on the development and implementation of computational approaches to identify genetic variants that contribute differently to phenotypic expression depending on specific environmental or genetic context/backgrounds, i.e. Gene x Environment (GxE) and Gene x Gene (GxG) interactions. The main project will focus on the development of a computational approach to be applied in the context of large-scale Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) either based on whole-genome chip-array and next-generation sequencing data available through collaboration with large consortia such as the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in operationalizing high performance computing services, such as workflow/pipeline implementation based on instructions. Previous expertise in application in areas of human genetics and genomics is optional. The post-doc will be trained in statistical genetics methods and will contribute to the development of a novel GxE computational pipeline under the mentorship of Dr. Guia Guffanti, with numerous opportunities to interact with statisticians and statistical geneticists that collaborate on the main project at Harvard Medical School, the Broad Institute, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The successful candidate will be proposed for academic appointment as a Research Fellow in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
The post-doc will work in the Computational Genomics Lab, which is affiliated with McLean Hospital’s Neurobiology of Fear Lab directed by Dr. Kerry Ressler. Together, these two labs provide a highly collaborative and dynamic research environment including, scientist and trainees with diverse expertise such as molecular biology, neuroscience, neuroimaging, psychiatry and human genetics. In addition, there will be numerous opportunities to take advantage of the educational resources offered by Harvard Medical School and the Broad Institute.
- Strong background in programming, in particular: R, python, and/or bash languages
- Previous experience with the development of R-packages or GitHub is highly preferred
- Experience with high performance computing and cloud computing
- Exposure to an analytic field such as bioinformatics and statistical genetics
- Self-starter with excellent problem-solving, organizational and creative skills
- Knowledge of large scale data and methods for management of these data, such as relational databases, iRODs
- Strong interest and background in biology is preferred
