Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Light Source (ALS, https://als.lbl.gov/) is seeking a Division Deputy for Science (Job Code S13.6 Sr. Scientist). Under the leadership of the Division Director, the Division Deputy for Science is responsible for reaching out to a broad range of scientific user communities, identifying new opportunities relevant to ALS capabilities, and leading development of the ALS strategic plan. It is expected that the Division Deputy for Science will develop relationships across the user community, participate broadly in the development of photon science at LBNL, and continue to participate in collaborative scientific research with the goal of maintaining the ALS as the world’s leading Soft X-Ray Synchrotron. The Division Deputy for Science participates as a key member of the Division's leadership team working directly with the Division Director, Deputy for Accelerator Operations, Deputy for Business Operations, and Program and Group Leads in developing the facility’s long- and short-term strategic plan in support of the scientific programs.
The ALS is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract more than 2,000 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The co-location of these user facilities – including the Molecular Foundry Nanoscale Science Research Center and the NERSC scientific computing center, as well as Berkeley Lab's outstanding programs in materials and chemical sciences among others – offers a prime environment for collaborative science. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undertaking a new project (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. What You Will Do:
• Represent the Division and Division Director to Laboratory, Department of Energy, and University of California management, as well as to other stakeholders.
• Oversees the development of the ALS Strategic Plan, which includes prioritizing the evolving portfolio of ALS supported science areas, instruments, and techniques in collaboration with ALS management.
• Partnership with the ALS User Services Group Leader and the ALS User Office, the Division Deputy for Science
• Oversees the ALS user program and the proposal solicitation and review processes that lead to allocating access to ALS instruments.
• Oversees the process for regular external reviews of the performance of ALS beamlines.
• Coordinates the activities of the ALS Science Council, whose purview includes advising on the ALS strategic plan and priorities for beamline and end station proposals, selecting Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellows, organizing reviews, workshops and the ALS seminar series, and related activities.
• Manages relationships with the ALS Scientific Advisory Committee, the Proposal Study Panel, and the Users’ Executive Committee.
• Ensure that all activities in the Division are conducted in a safe manner, which leads to better research outcomes, ensures the health of ALS staff and users, and protects the environment.
• Ensures that reports, publications, press releases and other media designed to highlight the activities of the Division are prepared in a timely fashion and are of outstanding quality.
• Chairs the Division Staff Committee, which oversees hiring, promotion, professional development of ALS scientific staff.
• Participates in annual performance reviews, succession plans, salaries, and personnel management of the scientific staff.
• Recognize and communicate best practices to foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment that reflects, embraces, and expands the vibrant ALS international community.
• Works through appropriate channels to improve Laboratory procedures/policies to more effectively support the research mission.
What is Required:
• Ph.D. or equivalent experience in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field. Significant years of experience beyond customary highest degree appropriate to the discipline.
• Significant experience with leadership, vision, innovation, and sound scientific judgment in evaluating scientific research proposals and results.
• Broad knowledge of x-ray science, with emphasis on soft x-rays.
• Demonstrated effective supervisory experience.
• Demonstrated ability build, mentor, and motivate a diverse team of technical professionals.
• Potential for effective leadership of a large, multidisciplinary scientific organization with ability to define, develop and communicate the Division’s strategic research mission, goals and associated initiatives, and to shape policies and programs in alignment with strategic goals.
• Substantial knowledge of the synchrotron radiation community and science.
• Experience collaborating in a diverse multidisciplinary team environment and excellent interpersonal skills.
• Ability to interact with a variety of technical and scientific personnel with varied academic backgrounds.
• Ability to make independent decisions consistent with organizational goals, policies and procedures.
• Exceptional planning and organizing skills and ability to develop solutions to complex problems.
• Excellent strategic planning and implementation skills; proven ability to work on multiple projects with varying priorities and deadlines.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with science funding agencies, foundations, etc.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to interact effectively with personnel at all levels throughout a large organization and with diverse external stakeholders.
