Organic and Inorganic Marine Chemistry Assistant/Associate Professors


The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS)/School of Marine Science of the College of William & Mary invites applications for two full-time tenure-eligible Assistant/Associate Professors. The positions will begin in Fall 2019. These positions are part of a multidisciplinary cluster hire at VIMS.


Qualifications: The successful candidates will hold an earned doctorate (Ph.D.) or an equivalent degree in Marine Science or a related discipline with relevant postdoctoral experience desirable. Candidates with research interests in any area of marine chemistry will be considered, but we particularly welcome applications from candidates with interests complementary to the expertise of current VIMS chemists and the ability to interact with faculty throughout the institute. We anticipate hires in both organic and inorganic disciplines. Departmental affiliation will be determined based on the interests and expertise of the successful applicants. Potential areas of interest include: inorganic and organic geochemistry, biochemistry, molecular and physical exchange processes, and effects of climate change and human activities in coastal and estuarine waters. Candidates must have a strong scholarship record commensurate with experience, demonstrated potential to establish an active externally well-funded research program, excellence in teaching, and strong communication skills. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will develop and maintain an active research and publication program, teach core and advanced courses, advise students (primarily at the graduate level), participate in university and VIMS/SMS governance, and provide advisory service on related resource management issues to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Candidates who are prepared to engage in cross-disciplinary research consistent with the VIMS mission will be especially welcome.


About the Virginia Institute of Marine Science: Chartered in 1940, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science is currently among the largest marine research and education centers in the United States. VIMS has a three-part mission to conduct interdisciplinary research in coastal ocean and estuarine science, educate students and citizens, and provide advisory service to policy makers, industry, and the public. The School of Marine Science at VIMS is the graduate school in marine science for the College of William & Mary. VIMS currently employs 52 full-time faculty members and 256 staff, and has 80 graduate students in master's and doctoral programs.
