Coastal and Estuarine Ecology Assistant/Associate Professor

 

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS)/School of Marine Science of the College of William & Mary invites applications for a full-time tenure-eligible Assistant/Associate Professor. The position will begin in Fall 2019.

 

Qualifications: The successful candidate will hold an earned doctorate (Ph.D.) or an equivalent degree in Marine or Biological Sciences, or a related discipline. Preference will be given to candidates with research interests in coastal and estuarine ecology with an emphasis on Submersed Aquatic Vegetation (SAV), especially seagrasses. Individual interests could include, but are not limited to, community and physiological ecology of SAV, or biology of marine, estuarine, or freshwater plants, restoration ecology, and conservation biology. Areas of particular interest include physiological, molecular, and/or ecological responses of submersed plants and associated animals, to natural and anthropogenic stressors in the context of climate or other environmental change. Candidates must have a strong scholarship record commensurate with experience, demonstrated potential to establish an active research program, demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, and strong communication skills. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will develop and maintain an active externally well-funded research program, teach core and advanced courses, advise students (primarily at the graduate level), participate in university and VIMS/SMS governance, and provide advisory service on related resource management issues to the Commonwealth of Virginia. The candidate is expected to direct ongoing seagrass monitoring and restoration efforts, as well as provide advice to Chesapeake Bay and state agencies on SAV matters. Candidates who are prepared to engage in cross-disciplinary research consistent with the VIMS mission will be especially welcome.

 

About the Virginia Institute of Marine Science: Chartered in 1940, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science is currently among the largest marine research and education centers in the United States. VIMS has a three-part mission to conduct interdisciplinary research in coastal ocean and estuarine science, educate students and citizens, and provide advisory service to policy makers, industry, and the public. The School of Marine Science at VIMS is the graduate school in marine science for the College of William & Mary. VIMS currently employs 52 full-time faculty members and 256 staff, and has 80 graduate students in master's and doctoral programs. There are four academic departments at VIMS: Aquatic Health Sciences, Biological Sciences, Fisheries Science, and Physical Sciences.
