University of North Dakota Computational Biology Assistant or Associate Professor
The Biology department in the College of Arts & Sciences is seeking a 9-month, tenure-track, Assistant or Associate Professor starting August 16, 2019, contingent upon available funding. Consideration for an Associate professor appointment requires that the candidate bring external funding with them.
The Department of Biology is an academic unit in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of North Dakota. It serves nearly 600 undergraduate majors, 1000 undergraduate non-majors, and 20 graduate students. In addition to teaching, our faculty members are involved in research programs that address fundamental questions in the biological sciences. Funding to conduct research comes from internal (i.e., UND) as well as external sources (i.e., local, national, and federal grants). The department offers graduate degrees through the Ph.D. and active training of graduate students is expected.

Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidates will demonstrate the potential to establish a productive and extramurally funded research program. The University has identified several focus areas of research known as Grand Challenges (https://und.edu/research/grand-challenges/index.html ) and is investing resources to support these areas. This position is at the intersection of two UND Grand Challenges: Health and Biomedical Sciences and Big Data. The candidate will take advantage of existing interdisciplinary groups of faculty working at this intersection, such as the Epigenetics group and the Integrative Systems Biology cluster. Candidates will use or develop mathematical and/or computational methods for analyzing complex biological systems (e.g., machine learning, data mining, statistics, bioinformatics, modeling). The specific methods used are of less importance than the integrative nature of the analytical approach. We seek candidates that study multi-scale systems and/or extract biological insights and predictive theories from massive datasets. The successful candidate will strengthen research in Integrative Systems Biology, which uses mathematical and/or computational models to understand how hierarchical molecular, cellular, and developmental mechanisms determine phenotype and how environmental factors impact these mechanisms. This position is also integral to growing our undergraduate major in Molecular and Integrative Biology. Teaching duties will be two courses per year during the first several years. Additional duties include service to the department, college, university and community.
Ph.D. in computational biology or related discipline
Preferred Skills/Desirable Qualifications:
Postdoctoral experience using or developing mathematical and/or computational methods for analyzing complex biological systems
Experience or interest in multi-scale modeling of molecular, cellular and developmental mechanisms that determine phenotype and how the internal or external environment impacts these mechanisms
Experience or interest in collaborating with diverse faculty (across STEM disciplines as well as culturally)
Evidence of ability to develop extramurally funded research program
Evidence of ability to contribute to undergraduate Molecular and Integrative Biology Program via teaching, advising, and providing undergraduate research experiences
Experience working with graduate students in research
